I have only a few generals (1 or 2), and they suck. So I have been giving armies to governors with high martial ability.

How can I increase the number of good generals?

Also, another question. Is there some sort of job progression to this game. I know to be a Censor, you must first be Consul, but does the same thing work for governors, generals, and other civil officers?

The requirements to be a general are onerous in my opinion. Prior Consuls, men who have been either Pontifex Max. or...Adelle I think(the civic guy) THEN Censor are eligible. So you can ram people through by making them Pont Max and Adelle and a year later replace them and make them Censor for 1 year. Repeat as needed anually until you have all your 7+ MIL people except for Populists as available Legates.

On a side note, I used to live in Charlotte back in 01-02, over in Pineville. Did they ever finish 485?

Man 485 by Pineville is a terrible bottleneck fro 4 pm until about 7:30 pm. The entire loop did not get finished yet. There is a piece between 77 and 85 that is incomplete, but the rest is finished. Now they just need to add 1-2 lanes on each side near Pineville, South Blvd and Ballantyne.

Thanks for your tips. So if they are pontifex, aedile, etc for a year, then you remove them and they can be generals. So just creat turnover in those positions until you have enough generals...makes sense.

Thanks.:)

Just to clarify, it's Praetor, not Aedile, that allows the Legate position.

So a general (Legatus) must be one of the following:
- A current or previous Consul.
- A previous Praetor.
- A previous Censor.
- A previous Legate. Characters can be appointed as a general by event, which allows them to be re-appointed again.

Hope that helps.

The way I get a good supply of generals (legates) is to grant everyone with a martial of 7 or better title of Tribune of the Soldiers
and the make them a Dux (governor) of a territory, then when I need a good general I dismiss him as Dux and then he is available as a legate.

Pontifex Maximus to Censor to Legate works iirc. Thanks for the correction, my vocabulary of Roman jobs isn't up to par :)
Unfortunately it works like this. It shouldn't but it does.

A Pontifex Maximus was frobidden from ever commanding troops, then again the office was for life. Julius Caesar had to bribe his way out of this office, to be able to command troops and I believe he was the only one to get out of that job and free to become general. Something about Gaius Marius making sure young Caesar would never outshine him or so the story goes. I guess Marius didn't think even Caesar would ever be able to get out of being Pontifex Maximus, shows you how much he knew. LOL

Was that not the "office" of Flamen Dialis?

Yup, I was wrong. Frogot to read that thoroughly.

That's not strange. Julius Caesar was both, one after the other. First was appointed Flamen Diales, though never really took up the office, and much later became Pontifex Maximus, through heavy bribing of the electors. He was so indebt that it is said to tell his mother he would never return home. Else he was going to live in the Regia (the official house of the Pontifex Maximus) or to exile (to be in debt was an offence for a Senator).
