The year is 1608. I am Great Britain with a PU over France and have Flanders as a vassal who owns the entire low-countries. I went Protestant and lead the great Protestant League to victory over the Catholics. When the war ended, there were 2 electors: Saxony (my ally), and Saxe-Launberg. Saxony voted for me and somehow I won the tie-breaker so I'm the new HRE Emeror. I need advise on what to do. I've not played as the Emperor before and I have no idea if I should be trying to get reforms passed as an outsider Emperor, or just ride the emperor bonuses until I lose an election and then breakup the HRE.

that actually JUST happened to me as well.

You can add land to the HRE to get IA and then pass reforms. Keep in mind it will take ~60-70 IA to pass reforms because right now there are a lot of heretic princes that all get -20 to desire to pass reforms.

DO NOT ADD YOUR CAPITAL TO THE HRE. You will be a duchy. You will be sad. If you decide you're fine with being a duchy, make sure that you're going to get a positive IA per month before you add your capital. No point in reducing yourself to a duchy to sit on 0 IA per month anyway.

WATCH OUT FOR THE CIVIL WAR. Cromwell can't be the emperor of the HRE, because he's a leader of a republic... (I'm not Emperor anymore because of this q.q)

If you decide you want to go with cromwell anyway HRE be darned, add ALL your land (except London) to the HRE just before you lose it, it will keep the HRE from ever passing a reform again because of out of empire territory. (I am currently personally providing -.58 IA per month due to provinces out of control of the empire.)

I think maybe you might keep the HRE with cromwell if you can pass the 6th reform (erbkaisertum), but i'm not actually sure.

if you pass the 'same nation always inherits' reform, don't you get to keep being Emperor even if you become a republic?

you can keep emperorship over hre as buddhist celestial empire england (so to speak), as long as you passed erbkaisertum..

you can become republic, theocracy etc also if you got it passed.

hre emperor gets huge bonuses, especially if you passs first three or 4 reforms by adding france and england to hre. then delve into scandinavia or italy or iberia, eat it all, add it, erbkaisertum, heck you can even revoke privilegia on adding provinces alone.

if you do NOT assign new electors and keep 2 as vassals while one other exists, you are golden.

you stay OUT of HRE of course, don't ever add your capital to HRE!!!!

In EU3 you could keep sending insults again and again, to get relations to -200 with anyone you wanted (gifts worked the same way). But now if you want those German electors to hate you, you'll just have to so some expanding in their area, to cause some outrage. Diplo-annexing a member of the HRE pisses them off real bad, also.

I never fight with the protestants, unless I know enough electors hate me, so I won't get the crown. -Unless I want the crown. But the only reason to want it, is to pass all reforms and form the HRE nation (AKA going full retard as some might say)... or just milk the benefits of those first 4 reforms, in perpituity. In any case, it's more of a ball and chain than it is a crown. Piss off the electors, and get on with your British Empire.

None of them seemed to mind at all when i finished diploing austria (PU), Or Hungary (vassal, and yes he was a prince), Or Luxembourg (inherit from PU).

Does the emperor not get the -30 malice per diplo annexation? Which decays slowly, btw... more slowly that AE. It could be that he doesn't, I don't actually have much experience w/ being HRE (in EU4, at least -- it's just had too much red tape wrapped around it in this game).

For me, it usually decays at around 2.2 -- 2.4 per year, and I usually get all the ideas that improve malice cool-down, plus have the diplomat. Still, not uncommon to get the entire empire hating me very quickly... no matter how much I try to minimize the effect, diplomatically.

What CB did you use to get all the electors into the war? Whenever I have tried to dismantle the HRE in the past, I could never get all the electors either allied to me or allied on the other side in a war.

conquest war on bohemia (the emporer) called in bavaria Trier (and Salzburg), Set bavaria as a co-belligerent so Bavaria called in Hainut (and brabant, that was a pain, they have like 12 level 6 forts...), set Trier as a co-belligerent and they called in Nassau. Verden is a PU, and I allied saxony. It helps that just after the religious league war the emperor is only going to get electors he likes, so they are much more likely to be in alliance web together.

You can also just declare multiple wars. that also makes it easier, because you can declare war, get to 100%, and then declare the next one and just not peace out. That way you have fewer armies to fight at once. I would have had to do that to get saxony under seige if they weren't terrified of me and decided i was just fine as an ally.

For instance if you want to rush dismantling the HRE (there was a challenge to do that not that long ago, you can do it by like 1475 if you're smooth enough) you need to declare like 3 different wars.

Unlike EU3, you can't DoW an HRE member if you're already at war w/ the emperor. Unless I'm just doing something wrong. So I assume you mean attack their allies, outside the HRE. But to do that, and get all of them, how many European nations are you going to need to be a war with, typically?

Anyway, the point stands... it's 'not so easy'. -Most of the time. There is no 'magic CB' to take down the HRE.

Honestly the way I usually do it, involves coalition members. Maybe don't attack the coalition directly, but attack one of their allies... which calls in the coalition as well. All that, plus a couple of electors allied to you... that's usually how I get it done. Also, I guess the league war might be a good opportunity, depending on the alignments.
