I have played since hoi 1. just reinstalled hoiv. playing as Germany.

I took out Poland no problem. did the benelux edict and attacked them with about 1.5 million troops of my total 2 million Germans. The belguims stopped me over and over and over. The netherlands joined allis in early 1940 and I attacked them as well. no success. At one point a division on the Netherlands defense had 750 soft attack?!?!?! my troops had 100 attack. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I expected to wrack my brain on Barbarossa looking at the best attacks and defenses. Not spending 1 year attacking Benelux?!?!?!

What gives? Any advice? This seems stupid, frustrating, and kind of boring................

So many people seem to be having this problem.
1) Terrain
2) Weather
3) Tech
4) Division templates
5) Screenshots/save would help diagnosis

The game has something called entrenchment that advantages troops that have been sitting at the border for a long time.

The way you counter it is by drawing plans and waiting for the planning bonus to maximize. And also using divisions with a lot of breakthru and soft attack. You probably have 6 tank divisons

It should be pitifully easy to take over Netherlands and Belgium, though it does somewhat depend on how much the French and the UK reinforce them.

Due to all the Rivers in the Netherlands it is possible to get bogged down. But your main "attack" line should go through the southern part of the netherlands. Let the Infantry, a separate army, get bogged down around Amsterdam. Then when your tanks are in the south west of Netherlands, you declare on Belgium, race through the south western part, then do the same to get to Paris and its done.

If you have the expansions (Together for Victory) its better because you can draw spear heads and the tank army divisons will follow a narrow front line.

You basically have to make sure your tank army uses different army leader and front line from the main infantry army.

In fact its irrelevant if the army can't conquer the Netherlands immediately. All you have to do is clear a path near the sea to Paris, and once France falls you can easily encircle the remaining Benelux (and declare on Luxembourg if you haven't...I usually don't because I go through the Ardennes, Breda, Antwerp, Lille, Paris.

It's actually kinda funny how the best way to beat France isn't to Blitzkrieg immediately, but to instead take The Netherlands first and then Schlieffen.

I find that avoiding the Benelux and prepping a naval invasion into France works wonders. Build all of the torpedo bombers, stack them over the channel, wait a few months to sink the French navy, then invade with a stack of infantry to grab the immediate landing zone, and some fast movers (light tanks and/or cavalry) to grab VPs. Take the northeast 1/4 of France and you've won (assuming they haven't gotten rid of disjointed government). Then surround Belgium and invade them from everywhere.

Of course, if the UK is involved this strategy gets a hell of a lot harder to pull off (you can sink the French navy in a few months, but the Royal navy is a tougher nut to crack). Having British units in France makes taking the territory you need a lot more difficult, because the Brits don't need to divide their attention between the Maginot and the Italian Alps, and they can send all their guys against you.

If you do the basics right (like having large enough army, trained, and enough planes), it ultimately is about concentrating your best units (normally tanks) and manually attacking a weak point in the lines, while your infantry attacks automatically with the battleplan to at least pin down the enemy. Air superiority is very important (or at least not having enemy superiority). There's lot of rivers (often you'd think you're attacking over land, but in fact you do not), and forests are also bad, especially for tanks, try to avoid them.

Once you push a hole immediately rushattack further and try to encircle some enemies. A player would probably try to cut you off, but AI is very bad at this.
