Hmmm worked for me.

I did claim throne on Spain. The guide goes into detail, but there is an event called "Spain a Hapsburg Throne". When Castile/Spain has no heir and you are both rivalling France, the event can fire and in fact usually fires.

After they have your dynasty there are a few different ways to go about it. When they had no heir I broke alliance, claimed throne, and truce broke. (This isn't the best way to do it lol). Fully diplo and religious plus other modifiers made the stab hits not so bad.

Thanks for everyones input above. I have never won the religious war and always seem to have to give up lots of land when the Ottomans come in. I am able to regain the HRE leadership shortly after when I switch my religon.

What would happen, if its possible, if Austria changed religions shortly after the turmoil starts and fights on the other side against the Catholics?

Well, first you wouldnt be emperor any more. Also there is a cooldown for switching sides in the leagues, so you wouldnt be able to instantly join the protestants. If in the meantime the AI declares war against the new emperor you have to sit it out (and risk a Peace of Westfalia or even a catholic victory).

Remember that participation in the war is also determuned by the relation to its members or war leader. When you stop being the catholic war leader many nations in the protestant league will eventually drop out as they only joined to oppose you.
