I found the files, but don't have anyway to edit them (no notepad ++).

I don't have Austria as a part of me because I thought I should counter France's alliance with Russia.

You'd be much stronger with Austria inside you than as an ally. Besides that would open yourself to another actually powerful alliance, most notably the UK which can march onto France via Dunkirk.

How should I kick them out of GP status?

Declare war on Austria, in your situation it should be with the "Free People" CB since you need an independent Hungary in order for Austria to join the German Empire. Than fully occupy Austria to drop their military and industrial score than wait a whole year(since that's how long it takes for nations to drop out of GP status) and than Austria will no longer be a great power, than add the "add to sphere" war goal and finish the war.

To be honest, a good way to knock France down a few pegs is to fabriacte a humiliate CB and add a acquire state wargoal once the fight has been knocked out of them. Take their industrial heartlands and watch their score tumble.

Remember to watch out for the Sleeping Bear though, remember what happened the last couple of time Germany tried to fight a two front war.

Can I do this even as Germany of do I need to be Prussia or NGF?

As Germany.

If you're Prussia or the NGF you just need to knock them out of GP status (no need to release Hungary.

But you would need to make sure that you are in a position to enact the Three Hurrahs decision very soon after the war. Austria or KuK will not remain a Secondary Power long, they simply have too great of a population and natural resource base.

So I tried it again and I'm the NFG it's 1870, Italy formed and Austria is #12. They have no hungry and no Italian possessions. But I have to wait for the truce to expire in 5 years to sphere them. Is this too much time? Am I screwed?

You COULD break the truce to sphere them, but you'll get a lot of Infamy. You have plenty of time, but it is difficult to keep Bavaria and Austria out of the GP club while also having them sphered.

The problem is that it's easy to knock them hard enough that they won't be GPs post-war, but if they were GPs going in then you (a) can't add sphering as a wargoal and (b) they won't fall out of GP status until after the war is concluded.

As you point out, you're forbidden from influencing them during your truce so they'll have the entire truce timer to rebuild their GP statuses.

A lot of times I've found the only way to reliably keep Austria down is annexing significant portions of it as NGF.

Just see how it goes though. If you have most of your truce timer still left, you might want to Humiliate Bavaria just for good measure. They have a pretty decent chance of becoming a GP themselves.

Another thing that couldn't hurt is Cutting Down to Size. I can't remember how reliable that CB is because when V2 first came out it was essentially meaningless, but you want to do whatever you can to reduce and keep low any and all of the three scores for both of those countries.

Once I managed to get bavaria out of GP without warring them.

I had to do it to Hesse-FREAKIN-Kassel, that ended up with 90 prestige in 1855.

Most likely that was of the event finding Neptune or Thoracic Surgery invention from Medicine tech.

Obviously there are no longer any patches, but I think that Prestige should no longer factor into being a GP. Being a one hit wonder in science does not a GP make...

Prestige is already potent enough in that it determines your priority for the supply of limited goods on the world market.

The trick is to add the "add to sphere" war goal during the initial war, first go in with with the Admit Hegemony CB, occupy Austria and let them fall from GP status than the Add to Sphere war goal becomes available so you add it to the war. You just need to make sure you have the rest of the necessary regions under your control/sphere so you can select the three hurrahs decision as soon as the war ends.

I though you couldn't take people from GP status during a war in HoD.

Will they still rise back up with hungry independent? And is it worth it to form "great" Germany

Will they still rise back up with hungry independent? And is it worth it to form "great" Germany

Are you talking about ALL of Hungary or just one province of Hungary? All of Hungary is a possibility to keep them down, but they still get a lot of support from Lombardia and Venezia.

Also, "is it worth it?"

That depends. I think it's a pretty fun goal because it's challenging. Your literacy will drop though and you're going to have a lot of non-accepted cultures, particularly Hungarian. If you want, try to just annex Bohemia, Moravia, and modern Austria though for most profit.

They have no Italian providences and because of a crisis, all of hungry is independent.

Also for future reference, what should my starting moves be as Prussia?

They have Russia, a non GP Ottoman Empire Sardinia-pediment and Papal States. I have Austria and Belgium. So this is un-balanced I guess? Should I try to sphere/ally Spain, who also is not a GP?

If France has Russia on its side, no wonder the French AI thinks they can win a war.

Try to ally the UK, that might discourage then.
