Need advice on a new computer...

Well right now I am thinking about getting the ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH74 17-Inch Gaming Laptop, Discrete GPU GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB VRAM, 16GB DDR4, 1 TB, 128 GB SSD (ROG Metallic). I never really focus on having a large dynasty or huge empire anyway, so I guess that is good for me. And I have recently dropped the use of autosaves since it runs better without them.

I got a lot of speed back by blowing my laptop out with a can of air, back and forth, side to side. I pushed out so much dust, my game doubled in speed.

edit - Yeah, that laptop on post #21 looks plenty fast.

The only question I'd ask is what the CPU is, but the rest of it is mostly equal to or better than my desktop, so you should be fine (I only have a GeForce GTX 750 Ti, but Paradox games don't need much graphics power at all. A 960 is overkill, though it'll be nice if you play other graphics-intense games).

When people say that their 3Ghz+ CPU's can't handle this game are you talking about running at speed 5? I have a 2.4Ghz i7 (about 4-5 years old) and don't get any slow down at all, with the exception of ironman saving (which I thought was more of a hard drive issue).

I still have a four-year-old Samsung Series 7 laptop that handles CK2 just as well as my custom console-killer tower. The only real difference is that the tower loads and saves the game a bit faster because the primary hard drive is a solid-state.

It doesn't take a super-powerful machine to run this game well: the main things you need are a good multicore CPU, a decent amount of RAM (say 8 GB), and a good-sized hard drive. I doubt if you even need an integrated graphics card.

Do you have any issues with building the rig ?? I can give you a 600 dollar option a 1000 ----or even a 1500 sweet option

Uh, ok, just for clarification:

1) The game is primarily single-threaded, so a good "multi-core CPU" won't actually matter.
2) Yes, you'll probably need 8GB of RAM, but since the game is 32-bit it won't use any more than 4. Ever.
3) A good size hard drive is, uh, good, but the biggest aspect of the game is the save files. Periodically purge those and the game isn't that big.
4) I think you meant to say that you doubt you'd need a "discrete" graphics card instead of integrated. I've got a 7750 in mine (2-3x better than integrated), and there's still graphics slowdown at speed 5 when panning the map. You might be able to make-do with an integrated, but it certainly wouldn't be optimal...

Unless you can tell him how to build a laptop, I'm not sure that that's going to really help. He needs a laptop since he travels a lot.

Fair enough on all of those. On the last one, I don't know enough about laptops to know the terminology (I think you understood me right, I was talking about my laptop's Intel HD Graphics versus the GeForce 730M card, and I figured apparently wrongly that the HD Graphics chip could do the job), but I thought I read somewhere that CK2 was multi-threaded.

I mean that on speed 5 it completely lags; when it runs it is something like a day a second. Speed 3 is smoother though a little faster. That as mentioned is a couple centuries in; but given how I at that point will be around 1500 holdings, have something like 4000 dynasty members, and all my counties are held by dynasty members, I am frankly not surprised it lags like that.
Runs perfectly fine until my realm gets too big.
