I can't think of anything interesting. For the capital, it's easy to do <<person>>stad/dorp/burg/haven/... but that seems too cheap as a name for an island, much less for an archipelago like the Canarias.

Een alternatief voor de Rio Grande provincie is zou ook aangenaam zijn / an alternative for the Rio Grande province would also be nice. 'Grote Rivier' (big/large river) sound far too lame as a province name, imo.

Someone with better knowledge of this should probably correct me but I think the Canary Islands translate into 'Island of the Dogs' while Madeira translates into translates into 'Wood' from Portuguese. Maybe Dutch equivalents to 'Island of the Dogs' and 'Wood Islands' would be appropriate?

Well, "Islas Canarias" means Isle of Dogs. So you translate that into Dutch, which according to Babelfish is "Eiland van Honden".

wikipedia says that, "Ilha da Madeira", means "Island of wood". According to Babelfish it would be "Eiland van hout" in Dutch.

I usually call Madeira "Jenever", for reasons any widely-drunk person will comprehend :)

Ah, but in Dutch you can then write that together: "Hondeiland". And "Houteiland" - or maybe (because it sounds better) "Houtland" (which means wood land).

In Dutch these islands are presently know as Madeira and Canarische Eilanden. How they would be called if they were colonized by the Dutch I don't know, but I wouldn't think they'd be called anything like 'Eiland van Honden' or 'Eiland van hout' but rather 'Hondeneiland' or 'Houteiland'. You might also prefer to just call it 'land' instead of 'eiland'. Tasmania, for example was called 'Van Diemen's Land'. A common theme (and the same probably applies for the English or any Germans) was to name the newly discovered places after their discoverers (e.g. Hudson Bay and River, Barents Sea), important goods which were produced there (e.g. Ivory Coast, Gold Coast, Grain Coast, etc.), after important people or institutions (e.g. Van Diemen's Land, Staten Eiland/Island), or after cities and regions were the colonists came from (e.g. Nieuw Nederland, Nieuw Amsterdam, Breukelen-Brooklyn, Haarlem/Harlem), or a name originated from contact with the natives (e.g. Manhattan, Connecticut, etc.), based on a characteristic feature of the region (e.g. 't Lange Eylandt-Long Island) or named after something nationalistic or something similar (e.g. Fort Orange, Kaap de Goede Hoop, etc.).

It's entirely legit to have a Dutch nation still call the Canaries the "Canarias" if they have any sort of expansionist dreams or classical bent, since the Romans also called them the Canarias. Insula Canaria, but the point still stands. Use classical names to fill in the blanks.
