Nazi Germany: Tales From the Third Reich

Tale 1: The Citizen
Prologue

"Dad, can I ask you a question?" A boy no older than eleven walked into the room, books in hand and a backpack hanging on his shoulders. Dirty blond hair curled tightly to his head, contrasting nicely with his brown eyes that oversaw a large, round nose. He looked at his father, from whom he got his hair, who was reading a newspaper. His blue eyes rose up from behind the paper to gaze at his son through his reading spectacles.

"Yes, what is it?" Though he hadn't been in Germany for ages, he still had a very slight accent from speaking his native language on a semi-regular basis to other locals also from Germany. His son sat his stuff on the floor and sat down on the sofa in the middle of the room, facing the fireplace, looking down at his feet. The father stood up from his recliner and sat down next to his, putting an arm around him and bringing him closer. "Is everything alright Werner?" When saying anything in his native tongue, the slight accent becomes obvious, accentuating his German roots.

The young boy looked back up at his dad, "where is my Opa? I see Oma sometimes, and mom's parents are just down the road." His father looked slightly surprised at the question and was unsure of how to answer.

Inquiringly he asked, "Where is this suddenly coming from?"

"Some kid at school was talking about his dad's parents and then he asked me about mine. I didn't know what to say." Werner's father now understood and responded tenderly.

"Well, my father, your grandfather, the man you're named after, is not with us anymore. He passed away a long time ago." Werner's dad patted his son on the head and got ready to leave, satisfied that he answered Werner's question, but was stopped by a tug on his shirt.

"What happened to him though? I really want to know." Like drills boring into him, Werner's eyes dug deep into his father's heart, forcing him to respond.

"It's not quite that easy. To really tell you, it will take awhile." He pondered for a moment but continued, "I think you're ready though. I think it's time that I tell you what happened. To explain what happened, however, I need to begin from before even I was born. In fact, this is before my parents met. This will be from what my father told my mother who told me. Please, get comfortable, this will take awhile." Werner shuffled into a comfortable position and waited expectantly for his father's story. "So, I suppose the best place to start is August 8, 1943, the date the Axis declared victory over Europe. I choose that day because before then there isn't much to talk about. His story begins in the city of Berlin..."

So I will be playing an alternate history Germany after World War 2 where Adolf Hitler lead the Nazis to victory instead of ruin. I'll be playing from the end of World War 2 until the end of the final tale, which will likely be roughly in the 70s.

Tale 1: The Citizen
Chapter 1: Victory

Today was a day like no other. A certain electricity ran through the air of Berlin as nearly every inhabitant danced in the streets, and paper confetti rained from the sky. Overhead the roaring of hundreds of planes added to the auditory chaos to make a symphony of celebration and euphoria. While nearly everyone was outside celebrating their victory against the Allies, one man stayed inside to complete his day's work. He continued to type on his typewriter, trying to finish the report he was to give later that week. A cannon fired, shattering his focus, so he gave up on trying and got up from his desk. He walked to the business telephone and dialed home to his parents, to see if they were home, and got no response, so instead he decided to just go outside and soak up the excitement. It's not as if he wasn't excited to see victory for the Fatherland, but he wasn't feeling super well and didn't think the loud noises and such would help. Once the door was opened to the bustling streets his ears were immediately flooded with noise as sound instruments, cheering, and fireworks pierced the air. A man turned around and recognized his friend as he came through the door of the business.

"Werner! So great to see you finally! Where have you been?" The man was practically screaming at the top of his lungs just to be heard by Werner who stood only three feet away.

Werner took a moment to collect himself and yelled back, "I just needed to get something done for work, I'm done now though." Werner's friend smiled and turned back around to join in the frenzy. Everyone began pointing down the street to see a group of German troops marching down the street. Like Moses through the Red Sea the soldiers parted the waves of people as they cheered them on. Werner partook in the festivities for a little while but headed home soon after when he felt his head beginning to throb. Making his way through the throngs of people swarming the street he finally reached the house he and his family lived in. Werner opened the door to see his parents dancing to music from the radio, and his younger brother in the kitchen setting the dinner table. Werner's mother spotted her son walking in and grabbed him and kissed him on the cheek.

"How great it is to see you! I'm glad you finally made it home! How are you feeling?" Werner's mother was beginning to show signs of aging. Her once blonde hair now had a whiter sheen to it, and wrinkles began to define themselves more and more across her face. She still had a certain beauty and gentleness about her though, unlike his father, who always more closely resembled an oak than a person with his thick, strong trunk and large branches. Werner had his father to thank for his slightly above-average nose size and defined features, but had his mother's wavy hair. Just like any other perfect German family they were all genetically blessed with blonde hair and blue eyes. While bluer than the sea, they weren't blessed with functional eyes, as every family member sported a pair of glasses and had for quite some time. Werner looked down at her mother over whom he towered and smiled.

"I'm fine. I feel a little sick though, and I think I might skip dinner tonight. If you leave my food in the oven it should be warm enough for me to eat when I wake up from my nap." He leaned down and kissed his dear mother on her forehead before departing upstairs to sleep. He paid respects to the painting of the Führer before plopping himself on his bed as he tried to tune out the background noise from outside. Eventually he began to drift off into a peaceful sleep, and dreamed of his future in the new German nation.
