Navies retreating when they win

All right, I'm fighting a very hard fight in the Pacific. For some reason, every time I encounter a Japanese fleet, my navy decides to retreat. I win the fight, my ships retreat. Even the force engagement doesn't help. Why do they retreat when they actually WIN?

I've noticed that too but force engagement always fixes it. :wacko:

That would be my guess. I've seen it a few times fighting the Italians as the British. Even with forced engagement the Royal Navy retreats after winning sometimes, but the ships are usually wrecked in that case.

Maybe they've exhausted their carried supplies?
