What exactly are the advantages of using Galley's instead of heavy ships? I once was playing as Venice in the demo with more heavy ships than the Ottomans but still lost the battle because they had more Galley's than me. Yet heavy ships have a lot more cannons, so shouldn't they be better? The biggest advantage I see in Galley's is that they are cheap. But how long can you use them before they become out of date? Secondly, with Venice in particular, the player probably should try and change history and push into the Atlantic Ocean, which should mean more heavy ships. Am I correct or not? What is the ideal naval size/ fleet size Vs. the AI?

Based on my EU2 days I have unchanged logic on this:

Galleys, cheap, but coastal.
Carracks, expensive, but can go out to sea.

(Gross simplification, but until someone tells me otherwise, thats my logic on them)

Galleys are fantastic in sea areas (they get a massive stat boost there), so as a Mediterranean power you should be using those mostly. They get weaker as the game goes on (based on EU3) and get destroyed in the ocean against heavy ships but early on they are fantastic. In other words don't build heavy ships as Venice unless your fighting in more than the Mediterranean.

Do they actually get a negative modifier in the ocean? I haven't see one fighting outside Lisbon.

Which is great, but the minute you go to war with Portugal they're going to be crushed! I really think, though I haven't tried it in the demo due to the short period of time, that Venice needs to get into the world trade areas to have a chance to continue to survive. So I guess my question is can Carrack's beat Galleys in the Med?

They don't get a malus outside of the Inland Seas. They just get a bonus inside of them.

If I'm not mistaken, in EU3, the Inland seas were:
- The Mediterranean & Black Seas up to Gibraltar
- The Baltic Sea
- The Red Sea
- The Persian Gulf
- Coastal areas from the Gulf of Tonkin to inside of Kamtchatcha peninsula. East coast of Japan is not covered by it, only the West coast.

In EU3, at the beginning of the game, Galleys were as good as or better than Carracks even outside of inland seas, if I'm not mistaken.

Early carracks are still quite powerful vs galleys, but are much more difficult to spam. As Venice, I actually decided to forgo spending money on advisers and went straight for getting a medium carrack fleet. Its a tadeoff, but one that isn't too difficult. I should also point out I made sure this Venice game started off with an Austrian alliance to prevent issues with the Empire.

Another, just as viable route for Venice is to get a level 2 adviser for Diplomacy and go straight for the third Naval Ideas idea. +100% Naval Force limits. I did this as the Ottomans (given it is their starting idea group), and ended up with 80 of 100 ships, about forty small ships to protect trade in Crimea, Ragusa and Constantinople, 20 galleys and 20 transports.

Honestly, I'd advise rushing that idea group over teching. 100% naval force limits is worth 3 techs.
