How do you use it ? Do you make fleets at all (Sure, if you got Russia, sea domination is not a priority...)

Me, as I take almost exclusively France, I use fleets very extensively...to the point that in my current game, in 1780, I have an astonishing 450 warships on the seas, with bases (shipyards) from Edo to Riga, including Quebec, Havana, Jalisco, Seychelles Islands, Tanger, Senegal, Chypre...

(It's to the point that there are a Red Sea Fleet based in Mekrah just for blockade in case of war the single port that Turkey have in the region...)

My only real fleet use is to invade Japan, Britain, and the New world. But then I've been playing as Sibir forever, and you can't really expect to have naval power with them eh? ;)

I use them when I have to

In other words I seldom put much gold into large fleets unless Im about to ship troopers to invade some far distant island...

Often I dont even care to build up a navy that can counter my enemies navy as you can often "move around" his superios forces and unload your troops on his "island" anyway :D

But I do admit it looks cool having an enourmous navy, dominating the high seas  :D

I disagree. Fleets are essential to any colonial effort...And they allow you to strike the ennemy everywhere.

Example : During my last war against the England-Low Countries, the Indus Fleet landed troops one month after the war declaration at Bombay. The Quebec Fleet intercepted and destroyed an troop convoy near Gander, which was then invaded. The Pacific Fleet took Hawai. The Edo Fleet allowed the invasion of Taiwan. The Cuba Fleet landed troop on the islands occupied by my ennemies, while destroying small fleets. The Hanoi fleet transported troops that tooked or burned possessions in Indonesia. During this time, the huge Ponant Fleet (Home Fleet...) landed without effort in a month delay 150 000 soldiers in England.

The fact is, you cannot built soldiers quickly im your colonies or colonial towns. That's not the case in Metropole, where a province with the Recruitement Center can turn-up whole armies. 50 000 mens will not bring you very far in Europe. In America, Asia, Africa, you will smash with them whole nations. But for transport them, you need fleets...lot of fleets.

well anyway, Carolus was right, and plus...Why go through that money and time when all I would do is walk to their provinces and annex them?

About the ''walking into the provinces and annexing them''...

The fact is, when you fight in Europe, you are generally fighting against people with allies, good fortifications, troops and navy of the same level than you, and Recruitment center. Any campaign in Europe is prone to end into a generalized butchery. Moreover, YOU CANNOT ANNEX YOUR RIVALS. So, why bother invading the whole Spain, losing 500 000 soldiers in the process, if you will get at best 250 golds and three lousy provinces ? I always fight for the colonies (well, that's not prevented me from acquiring Luxembourg, Hainaut, Artois, Roussillon, Flandres, Zélande, Koln, Courlande, Thuringe and Franche-Comté by war, plus Bade, Alsace, Lorraine, Nice and Savoie by diplomacy), and almost never on European ground...

Fleet actions are fantastic against huge empires with weak navy-especially about the Ottomans, my favorite target. Each war they make against me end in total disaster for their side, as troops from France arrive usually to the battlefields far more quickly than their own armies...

1 word (ok, maybe like 4)- Papal States Annexed Spain

also, why do you take pleasure in beating the Turks in the seas? They have no need of ships, and thus no need of a naval war...

"Three lousy provinces?"....Actually I'm satisfied when I get 2 lousy provinces(Andalusia and Toledo:D) from Spain and 250....anyway after you knocked them down once...it is very easy to knock them down again.

I play almost exclusively as England and I base most of my strategy on naval power. I don't need to keep an army in Britain because nobody can get past the fleet to invade :) Anybody who is at war with me immediately gets all their ports blockaded which, not only cuts into their income but also; if they are a colonial power, cuts them off from their colonies and leaves them ripe for me to walk in. Also constantly winning naval battles against my enemy pushes up the victory percentages, which means that no only are they more willing to come to the peace table but I get better indemneties as a result. Whoever said that naval power doesn't win wars in EU2 is so wrong....but of course that all depends on what nation you play;)
