Naval Poll: what is your biggest peeve?

  • Carriers shouldn't fight. They should always try to retreat from surface engagements

    Votes: 115 34,1%
  • Carriers are ineffective because they cannot project their power effectively

    Votes: 104 30,9%
  • Battleships are one-trick ponies; even if they win the sea war, they are then mostly useless

    Votes: 31 9,2%
  • Fleets are one-dimentional. Diversity should be encouraged

    Votes: 134 39,8%
  • Destroyers are just too fragile, even when abstracted

    Votes: 49 14,5%
  • Subs, Destroyers, and (to some degree) CLs aren't represented with the full power they can bear

    Votes: 92 27,3%
  • SHBB, CVL/E, and CAGs can't keep up with their counterparts

    Votes: 50 14,8%

What I personally don't like is the way doctrines are set up to basically force the player and AI to pick 2 ship types. Every navy used most of the ship types historically for a reason, yet the game encourages you to pick a single screen and capital ship to focus on rather than use all ship types. There's a reason why Germany's Plan Z included carriers and destroyers, and why Stalin's 1936 build plan included ships of every class defined in the naval treaties, rather than just subs or carriers and light cruisers. The thinking was that each ship type has a role it excels in, and you need ships of every type to be effective. None of that is reflected in the game outside of the OOBs.

If anyone's interested in how navies were actually used and how each country planned to build up their navies before the war, check out the navy info thread in my signature.
