I purchased this game from Steam a couple days ago and have enjoyed it quite alot but I'm stumped when it comes to my Navy. I'm playing "The Abyss" and have taken over and annexed the Confederates. My army is now in the province next to the Panama Canal but the Liberatores have a massive army keeping me from invading from land so I think an amphibious assault may be in order. No can do, I don't get the option for an amphibious landing in ANY territory ANYWHERE! What could be the hold-up? I have Puerto Rico and it seems to me I can supply any invasion force on the north east coast of South America....There's something else also. I cannot make naval bombardments from my battle ships. I decided to try and soften up the defenders of Panama by bombarding them but again, when I select my naval force and right click the territory to be gunned I get the "That is not in range of your unit" or something similar.

I'll bet there's a simple explanation for this but I can't seem to find it as Steam didn't see fit to include a manual with my purchase....either that or they hid it so well I can't find it anywhere! Any help would be much appreciated.

I can't move my navies more than one water "territory" (whatever you call it) from my owned lands. How are you supposed to mount an assault or offensive in Europe? Naval or otherwise? Hell I can't even get my naval groups (most of my task forces have 2 carriers, 2 Battle Ships, a couple of submarines and at least one screen for every capital ship) to Hawaii!

Alot of questions I know but hopefully someone can help me. If nothing else tell me where Steam hid my *%$& manual

Rebase your fleet to a closer base. The range is calculated from the home base of the ships, the one displayed after "this unit is supplied from". You can only change the home base by rebasing, not by simply moving to another port. Select your fleet, CTRL+right-click on a friendly port closer to your target and select the rebase mission. After it has arrived, you will suddenly be able to perform all those missions... ;)

Also you might find the HoI2 wiki useful: http://www.paradoxian.org/hoi2wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Mixing all those ship types in one fleet is very ineffective in HoI2. Go with just BB+DD or CV+DD (or CL instead of DD) for your fleets, maybe with CVLs mixed in (if you're not using the latest beta-patch).

Thank you very much for your help Pal, how does one launch an offensive across an ocean then? My fleet was based in Miami iirc and that's a hell of alot closer to Panama than it is to the shores of England

First make sure you have not too old ships in the transport fleet which limit the range. Then if the range still is too far invade some point between (needs to have a naval base) to get a stagin ground. I once invaded Iceland from Germany, then rebased my fleet(s) to Iceland and took it as a staging ground for an invasion of America.

your problem is that Panama's beach is on the Pacific side. I know, the map shows differently, but at least in DD 1.3, that's the issue. Check the terrain overlay and see where the beaches are locally. Try taking out say Nicaragua, or Columbia and moving against Panama that way.

As for launching offensives across oceans, you have hit upon the reason that the islands of Greenland, Iceland, Bermuda, and the Azores are so important.

I would always take Venezuala through the Dutch and French Colonies of Northern south America. Guyana and Georgetown area. Just for the reason of capturing its oil reserves and cutting it off from the Allies. Then you can get to the Panama canal has well as Texas, Florida and North Carolina with ease. Its a possibility! Plus you won't have to worry about the winter from there as well.
