REPOST of an old thread of mine seeing as Native Americans and Mesoamericans are getting looked at
I feel like there should be a lot more to the American theatre in this game, especially for the native americans.
For one thing colonialism is too easy, historically many parts of the modern U.S. weren't colonised until the mid 1800s because of the hostile environment as well as the threat of natives. However, in this game you or the AI has and potential to colonize the entire american continent by the mid 1700s. Ive seen AI spain colonize all of their historical lands, plus Alaska, california, the entire west coast of america, as well as half of canada before my own canada took the remaining land.
There's multiple issues here, the AI cheats with colonialism as we all know. In a spanish game ive played i own all of iberia and bits of morroco, i began expanding into the new world and Africa but suffered restrictions with distance. Yet England somehow had managed to gain colonies below my african ones and had also taken land in south America despite not having any close land. The AI as far as i can tell doesnt suffer from distance modifiers as much, alongside this they also dont suffer uprisings. Put this with my example of Spanish America earlier the AI will eat land after land with no hassle at all. This needs to stop. Colonialism was no easy task, my country (England) struggled repeatedly to set up colonies, their earliest (Roanoke) disappeared and it was pretty stagnant toll the thirteen colonies.
The other issue is how weak the native tribes are, i know they suffered tech differences in reality but they put up a hell of a fight in many areas and made it difficult for europeans to expand. Their use of skirmish warfare isnt reflected in game, the AI and player can simply bring a huge army (ignoring the logistical issues of such a feat) and stack wipe entire tribal coalitions at once and eat up half of America and Canada. The natives need a universal buff, perhaps a big bonus to fighting in certain terrains in the Americas such as woodland and forest etc. Basically something that would make it difficult for the AI and player to steam roll, something to make them choose battles carefully.
Similar to this should be the actual colonial regions themselves, like i said its possible to colonise entire areas at once with no consequence, i think for native factions this should generate some form of AE, perhaps it could also increase the aggressiveness of colonial areas surrounding to simulate the spread of news of these new people taking land from tribes. This could potentially lead to coalitions and more management of colonies where the natives are more prone to uprisings, for both player and AI. After all, no one wants to be conquered, but the historical reality of native americans fighting to for their independence is minimised in this game so much. Especially when some factions like France can combine policies and have 0% native uprising chance and 100% assimilation rates.
Colonial nations need to be changed too, we should have more control over them and their potential lands. We should be able to decide their border limits and their policies. For example, i may own all of the Caribbean and i want it to serve primarily as a trading colony. I should be able to set this policy and the colony should focus more on internal development, building trade ports and building a bigger navy to protect trade routes and privateers nearby rivals. On the other hand i may have American colonies that are entirely land based, i may decide to set them as an expansionist, or defensive colony. This colony would instead focus on building a bigger army and expanding to reach its colonial borders which i have set them e.g the regions of Louisiana, eastern America etc. I would also like to edit my own flags for them, similar to the dynasty symbol for CK2 but thats an afterthought
Also forts shouldn't be castles in the new world. Wooden forts and lower level defence is better. Similar to how units change appearance when in different regions so should forts. Just a minor thing though
So yeah main points are:
- Harder colonialism, dynamic natives and factions that react to your expansion
- a buff to military tactics and morale of native americans (likely depending on the battlefield)
- Apply the same rules of colonialism to the AI, no more cheating AI!! AI suffers aggressive natives too!!
- better NA AI that want to defend themselves against the Europeans more
- regions farther into America e.g the west and central regions should be difficult to colonise because of hostile environments
- more negative and positive effects, colonists desert, the presence of nearby hostile AI tribes raiding, starvation etc. But can be counter balanced, deportation of heretics, penal colonies, friendly nearby tribes (good relations) better environments etc
-more direct control over colonies, set their policy, attitudes and focus.
- set colonial borders for nations
- more diversity in names!! English Louisiana? Named after a Frenchy king? No thanks!
-customisation of their flag. No more half and half
Finally id like to see a lot more stuff with pirates. What if colonies could defect depending on your stability and over extension? Struggling to manage at home? Sorry but those criminals you deported to Tobago have decided to become pirates. After the development of colonies to a certain point and date mid 1500-1700s there should be an event about a pirate boom, pirate ships could spawn from uncololonised lands and privateer, this would go nicely with the ability to set CN focus to trade and naval dominance as they would use their ships to engage and protect your trade. The pirates could be gradually reduced by the prescence of naval protection of trade and the depletion of empty colonial land.
There's a lot more but it'd have to include a potential attrition system, e.g massive armies cant be transported across the sea, massive armies cannot march straight into enemey capitals without creating a supply route through occupying land etc. This would make new world expansion harder but the notion of an attrition system is a different topic altogether.
What do you guys think?
