IIRC, Flanders is counted as one of the vassals of the French king, so according to the rules set out for the game (only soveriegns are playable), it is unplayable. I think there is a group of people here doing some research and lobbying for the various French counts to be playable in the game, since some were more powerful than the French King himself. I'm not sure, but perhaps Flanders is included in their efforts. If not, maybe you should join them. ;)

I think everyone knows that by now . . . I think its just easier to refer to playing a specific nation rather than referring to the dynasty controlling that nation. A lot of the people here don't even really know what dynasty is ruling each nation at this point. I know I've done this, it's just easier to refer to the name of the nation when talking about playing the dynasty of that nation. :)

Heck I made a case for Flanders many months ago, dragging in the crusades (and especially the first and fourth), the city revolts, the bayeux tapestry (flanders was one of william the conquerers greatest allies) , the double allegiance (france-HRE), the economical importance and finally the early expansions. In short for a large period of time the count definitely was richer and often more powerfull than the king himself. All to no avail apparently. :(
Hey greatwarrior what was your flemish ancestor's family name? Maybe we're distant relatives...

I think the "authentic" names for the different kingdoms/duchies/etc. give a different feel to the game than if the names were all just in English. Much better for the role playing aspect, IMHO. :)

Well, I disagree. The language of the game is English, thus I think the English names should be used. If native names are going to be used, then _be consistent_. As it is now, some nations/provinces are called by native names, while others carry their English names.

Also, "King of Sverige" just sounds so ridiculous in my ears. That "Sverige" is anachronistic doesn't help either. :)

i agree. snowball has promised multiple loalized versions, so maybe we should stick with all english names for the english version.

one thing i can tell you though, the map will be filled with localized province names, unless something changed in the past 9 months

Then where, pray tell, with the Plantagenets come from?

[RESPONSE TO SARCASM]

I say, the House of Anjou will be in the game as a non-playable entity. You do however know, that considering that the game uses a dynamic dynastical system the Plantagenêts will probably never exist;now don't you.

[/RESPONSE TO SARCASM]

Possibly. Or, the House of Anjou could find its way to the imperial crown of the HRE:eek:. If it's truly dynamical who knows.

Or perhaps marry into the Capetian house and become eventual King of France!:)

If there were no Salic Law maybe it would have been a possibility.
