At the start of the game Nationalist China will be at war with Japan right? Or will they just be very bitter enemys?

Nah Japan doesn't invade China until 1937. But dont worry the Nationalists are at war with Sinkiang (and friends) and the Communists so you will have lots to do .

That Northeast part in Manchuria, it was created as a separate state during the break-up of the Chinese republic. The Japanese Army independently decided to take control of it in 1931 .
