Hi guys!

I played and enjoyed the game sevral times, but still I wonder about something: how does the "national" shields that appear on provinces in political map influence the outcome of the game?

I mean, i know they are objectives to be conquered at the end of the game, but how much VP is it worth?

Now I'm playing Russia, I diplo-annexed Ryazan and conquered Estonia, part of Crimea and Poland and the mongol nations in the east. But still there are provinces in Poland and the Teutonics that bear the russian flag, and as I'm not a warmonger, I'd like to know if i can win the game without necessarily conquer these provinces (in fact I'm more interested in turning my attention to the south, against the Uzbeks, Persia and Turkey, and maybe even against China to the east :D ).

Does anybody knows about that?

The national shilds represent the core provinces of your nation..as long as some other nation has one of them you have casus beli on them...you can win the game without them

And yes welcom to the EU forums....(and don't forget to buy EU2 when you get fed up with EU):D

Thanks a lot m8!

That's great for my plans, as I've just conquered Uzbekistan and have just taken my first step over my long-term goal of conquering China, this way I'll avoid petty conflicts against Poland just to get those damn flags!

Humm I think I won't buy EU2 right now, it's only my third EU1 campaign, so it'll take me quite a long time before I'm fed up with it! :D

I've played as Russia two or three times, and I too favour the Asian approach, as most of Asia is a push-over. Go for Persia, India, Japan and China in that order.

Persia and India give you the necessary naval bases to hit Japan, which in turn gives you easy access to the tons of troops you need to conquer those formidable, chinese fortresses.

While this is going on, you must not forget to whittle away at your European foes however. Taking Asia will make you the BB of the century, and they will be falling over each other to get at your throat. In the long run, you will be much, much stronger, but it makes your job a lot easier if Poland, Turkey and Denmark haven't grown too much.

I know you say that you aren't a warmonger, but playing Russia will almost always make your BB-rating go through the roof, especially if you want to dominate Asia. So wether you like it or not, you are going to have a pretty violent game on your hands.

Another thing to remember about the provinces with your shield on them is that since they are "core" provinces to your country, when you annex them, those provinces don't have any nationalism revolt risk. All provinces you annex without your shield on them gives you the standard +3 revolt risk due to nationalism.

Welcome to the forums. :)

One more thing, I'm not sure if you've figured this out yet, but any province you annex outside of Europe doesn't give you any nationalism either. Only provinces in Europe will give nationalism.

The provinces with your national flags does not give you any extra VPs. However, part of your VP score depends on military victories, like favorable peace deals and such.

LOL you're right I'm preparing to wage a continous war against these poor and defenseless countries in the east, while pretending to be a peaceful ruler.......:D

In fact I meant I'm not a warmonger in the sense that my main interest in the game is not world domination, but rather build a strong and respected empire of reasonnable size.

It's only that, as Mjuul said, Russia as few opportunities to extend it's frontier by simple colonization, so I resolved to attack my eastern neighbours rather than my western ones......wich does not mean that I'll let Poland and Turkey become too powerful, nor that I won't take any opportunities to annex more western provinces if the right conditions arise.

It's just simply that I'm planning to extend east rather than west.

Otherwise, I'm a pacific ruler, and when I played Austria, I nearly never declared war on my neighbours, only defending myself against aggressions (wich didn't prevent me to end with nearly all of central europe, from the Black Sea to the Baltic ;) ).

How about writing an AAR, so we can all compare your progress to mine as Russia? As for colonization, if you trade maps quick enough you can get to India early. I've reached the early 17th C and for many years Russia has had the largest colonial empire in India: Portugal has 3 TPs; I have 2 TPs, a colony, and a city (and have built quite the seige army at Cochin so I won't have to offer a hasty truce the next time Mysore declares war in their insolence:D ).

Good idea, I'll write an AAR of my game, but the first part will lack of precision, as I'll read it from memory alone (anyway I've just reached 1570, so it's a short period to remember, I'll overcome this task I hope).

I trade maps with Netherlands, but rather than India, I discovered America and Africa this way! Anyway, I already know a part of india and all of China, so it's even better to know of the over parts of the world.

Yeah, if you colonize the "Corridor" from Sibir to China, you will have enough geographic knowledge to trade with countries like Spain, Portugal, France, etc. and discover rich provinces of America or India.

A tip: if you colonize outside the "Corridor" try to build colonies who could be used as supplier for your ships and avoid attrition. For example, if you have a colony in India and America, build one in Africa (Table is a very good location) to avoid too much attrition.
