Does anyone have a good link that explains National Ideas better?

To change from the strating ones you embrace costs a rather large stability hit. Mine dropped down by three to a new one that came available after research.

It also shows that the previous idea is no longer gray so is it not counted anymore? Can you only just have the three for republic? To me I'd rather keep my stability and stay with the older ones and just ignore it because I dont see a huge increase in some of these new ideas.

Any comments and helpwould be great, thanks in advance.

Yes, you can only have three as a republic. The only government form with more is Dictatorship, which you can get to from any republican form.

Also, when your government form changes, you get to select all new ideas for free, so if you can manage to make yourself a dictatorship, it is painless to select new ones.

The old idea is not counted anymore.

Whether new ideas are worth it to you will depend on the game your playing. Generally, only a few ideas will be worth it to you regardless of the stability cost, so it's not surprising that none of these ideas really appeal to you. Cavalry focused factions will want to grab Cataphracts. People who love omens will want to take Divine Right if they are not Greek or Druidism to boost omen success chance (the boost to population from a certain omen over a century can be very helpful). People who love auxiliaries will get real mileage out of Tribal Recruitment, as fast replenishing cohorts with free manpower are great.

Changing ideas willy-nilly, however, is a bad idea, as you no doubt have figured out.

I would rather keep my idea slots open for 40 years, until the ideas I want become available, than switch later and take the stability hit.

Yeah, but the problem is that you'll then lose the often very nice bonus you get when eslecting all ideas, and the right kind of ideas. You'll also lose the potential benefit of the idea you choose not to use of course.

I think it's working fine in game. It's a balancer making it very expensive for larger countries to change ideas, ergo making it harder for the large ones.

And remember, if your nation changes it's government, yoou'll be able to choose all your ideas one more time, without stability hit.

Yeah, it's a dilemna.

Take Carthage for e.g. You start with two military ideas. You could take Horse Lords, since there is a horse province in Africa that you can colonize early. But the other idea available is HI discipline, which is entirely useless for years, until you can colonize that iron province in Spain.

In my Carthage game I took the risk and kept both slots open until I got my land and naval tech to level 5. I made sure that I always had the highest finesse people working on those techs to shorten the time.

Perhaps the stability hit is to much.

I can imagine the following event:

Rome gets a new Consul/dictator. Instead of the -3 stab hit (?) it will be ranging between -3 and -1 depending on the new consuls/dictator Charisma rating? It could only happen once every time you get a new consul/monarch and could even give him a positive/negative trait. I can imagine a powerfull man changing things in his country.

Edit: you could also attach it to a leaders popularity rating, simulating the positive effect of a popular leader, and the negative effect of a hated ruler.

The problem is once you become a huge nation and have high BadBoy it is impossible to stab the pig. Stabbing the pig becomes over 1000 gold and continues to increase.

Sometimes I keep a slot open if I am playing as a monarchy because I like the NI that gives 100% to cavalry offense.

Tribes and Republics have it slightly easier in the NI department as they are able to pick new ones for free once their government changes.

A military tribe starts with 1, within 50 -75 years they become a military republic. Giving 3 empty NI slots. Then you can later become a dictatorship giving 4 empty NI slots.
