I was thinking, the current system of country ideas that you get as you unlock more generic ideas is kind of a silly system. It is unrealistic in that if you take your nation in a different direction to what is historical you still get the same ideas. My suggestion would be that every nation has a unique starter and finisher for every idea group. So nations get their tradition as before, but they now also get 8 ideas which are dependant on which ideas they are picking up.
So if France picks up humanism it gets lib, frat, ega but if it doesnt then it doesnt. Every nation would still have a distinct flavour to it for example Prussias trade ideas would probably be more along the lines of privateers and trade power while the netherland might get trade efficiency/national income.
This would still allow cool historical flavour but it might make you feel that you are really building and defining your nation rather than it still be determined by real history which is silly.

Admittedly this would require rather a large umber of ideas for each nation however if Paradox announced they would be doing this a few months before starting implementation I am sure they could probably get the forums to do most of the heavy lifting for them in terms of researching nations and coming up with more ideas.

wouldn't work. The national ideas unlock with the first 3 ideas you choose. What if France chooses humanism as 4th idea. Also for 600 tags 15 different idea sets sound WAY too much work.
