Why do I get the national decline events? It claims other explorers are coming back home with wealth. However My country is bring home more ivory, tea, spices, coffee and cotton than any other nation.

This event is absurd because it's bound to exploration idea (which I have not chosen). Just because I can't hire explorers doesn't mean my nation isn't in prosperity..
I started a thread about this event some time ago with the hope that Paradox might actually respond to it but they didn't so I make this new thread with the hope that Paradox will fix this event.

A small nation like Britany that picks Exploration ideas is probably have more national decline that mighty Persia that has no exploration idea.

IIRC National Decline checks to see if you have provinces in the New World. Not if you have colonial nations.

Just one more thing broken by a CoP release that should not have happened for 2-3 more months.

The National Decline Event should not just check for colonies in the new world. I have colonized Asia (am playing as Persia) and have a small Colonial Empire in the Pacific and I've conquered all of India so really the event should be changed. Landlocked nations in the HRE maybe should get this event or other nations don't expand into new lands.

It doesn't check for colonies in the new world or anywhere else. It checks if you have taken the Exploration national idea. That's it.

So if you take Expansion and build loads of colonies it doesn't matter. You still get this event. Yes, its obnoxious. It ought to be fixed.

It is yet another case of taking an event that made sense in EU3 and exporting it without any thought into EU4. In EU3 this event was fine, but with the way national ideas work in EU4 it's terrible.

The entire event system is EU4 is shoddy. But even Johan has admitted that. Hopefully some day the devs will actually invest the time to properly fix it. Although given how much time it will take, and how it doesn't easily fit into any DLC ideas, I'm not as hopeful as I'd like that it will happen soon.

Yup, it only checks if you have quest for the new world and western technology.

He obviously didn't use the word shoddy.

There was a long thread a month or two back about the deficiencies of the event system in EU4. Johan posted that he agreed that the events, mostly imported from EU3, needed to be seriously looked at. I can't find the thread offhand, but it wasn't more than a month or so ago back. Someone will remember where he said it.

We'll see if anything ever happens. Overhauling the event system is a very big and time-consuming job if done properly. Most of the events need to be taken out of disconnected random "events" unconnected to your actual game, and turned into thoughtful event chains that tell stories with triggers that make sense. I doubt they want to do all that work unless they can put it into a DLC, which realistically they can't in any simple way.
