One other thing.
I believe that I've on several occasions have heard Germans sing both the first, second and third stanza of "Das Lied der Deutschen".
The "Deutschland über alles" part is in the first stanza.

IIRC Hitler was actually the man who re-instated "Das Lied der Deutschen" as the national anthem. I believe it was outlawed to sing that tune, in the Weimar days...

When did you hear that then ... ?
The official anthem is the THIRD verse ... and on official occasions (football, national holidays etc.) only that verse is sung ...

Unless the people you heard were bald, wearing jackboots, and lifting an arm
( ) I don't think there are many instances (in Germany at least) were you'd hear the first verse ...
Actually 1954, after Germany won the Worldcup (football) the crowd in Zurich was intoning the first verse  ... I guess they were of an older generation

"Ironically, Das Deutschlandlied did not become the official national anthem until declared so by President Ebert of the Weimar Republic in March, 1922. "

What do both sentences mean?

Thanks!

"ueber alles" means "above everything" or "excelling everything" or "superior to everything", open to interpretation really... unless you know the historic context in which it was written ...

"schoenes Vaterland" means "beautiful fatherland" in the sense of ... home-country

but the latter does not appear in either of the three verses ...

I guess that "uber alles" was discussed on a Victoria thread not many ago (use the advanced search function) and it was explained that it meant more specifically "above everything". Why?

In those days Germany was a myriad of tiny states and the meaning was targeted to inspire those tiny states to leave everything behind (personal pride) and become only one "unified" nation.

In other words:

Fritz "Hallo Franz, prinz of Westburg (population 2)"
Franz "Hallo Fritz, duke of Wandburg (population 3)"
Fritz "Franz, I've heard something about unification and forming one nation"
Franz "Ja. I've heard that too. The say we should give up our precious independence in favor of the glory of one country"
Fritz "That's what they say. How would they collect taxes?"

Do you get the meaning

On the "Deutschlandlied" or "Lied der Deutschen" issue:
1) Although the melody is from Haydn, the lyrics are from Hoffmann von Fallersleben.
2) AFAIK, the text has never been changed.
3) It was the German national anthem during the Weimar Republic starting from 1922. During the 3rd Reich, the first verse was used as an introduction to the "Horst-Wessel-Lied". The later one is banned in Germany, but no verse of the Deutschlandlied is.
4) It was the national anthem of the Federal Republic from 1952 to 1991. All 3 stanzas, but only the 3rd was to be sung at official occasions.
5) Since 1991, the 3rd stanza only is the official German anthem.

Well now thats settled...

By the way... not all of the anthems need to be played... maybe just the chorus, or the part used on unofficial occasions.

No, WWII was not the Olympics... but listening to your own anthem while crushing other nations is... well... very fun and patriotic :p

Name me one that isn't!!.

Could you imagine a punk rock anthem?! ( bet that will happen in the future  )

I believe you should be able to pick your music track (Eg. Battle at Poltova (sp?) or the Battle of 1812), the type of music (eg. Default Classical or My Music 1, 2, 3 etc...)

Then you should be able to select "Country Specific Anthems On/Off?"
If you select on, it will randomly play the anthem for the country you are playing, but it will only work for default classical, also you can add/edit the default classical if you want a different style of music with the anthems or you want more/less classical tracks.

This will suit both Gemany and USSR

I didn't realise we had 1930's Germans and Soviets who would play this game and would be offended if the 1944 Soviet anthem or Haydns music was played...

I don't doubt that, but I don't want any classical music. Wagner, or more specific the "Ritt der Walkuere" which was in HoI iirc, is the best song for a tank attack.

Actually that goes for any country. Listening to their national anthem and just... taking over the world. *wipes tear away* its so patriotic

I think National Anthems are a good idea. After a quick search, I was able to find the USSR National Anthem (1944 version) sung by the Red Army choir.

What could be better than rolling into Germany, screaming "Death to the Fascists!" while this song is blasting from your speakers?

NOTE: The author takes no responsibility in the case that you do decide to do such a thing. :D

Does make you want to crank up a T-34 and play a Russian campaign. Maybe they should use anthems in a victory screen or intro to war.
