There was this request for nation-specific brigade names popping up every now and then, which got me thinking. I actually already brought up this idea and it had some support, so I thought I could start a new thread to promote it! Who knows? Maybe it could make it into the next expansion! :)

So, we have default and nation-specific names for the different tech levels. For example, the Infantry Small Arms are named after some rifles/sub-machine guns used by that given country at the time (or rather from that time). The models are not the same either. A level 2 Light Tank is called differnetly in the Japan and in Italy. We also have nation-specific names for political parties. The Market Liberal party in the US is not called the same as the one in the United Kingdom or the Soviet Union. Similar to that, I think the engine could allow nation-specific localisation for any text in the game!

The syntax would work similarly to tech names and model names. If there's a string like "whatever", then the engine would recognize the "ENG_whatever" string as well, and for the UK player, the string would be replaced by that line of text.

Here are some interesting uses for such a possibility:
  • Nation-specific province names. Danzig would be called "Gdansk", if you play Poland, Moscow would only be "Moskva" for the Soviet Union, etc.
  • Minister positions could be different per country. For example, the British Head of Government would be called "Prime Minister", while the American Head of State would be called "President of the United States" (or simply President, if that's too long).
  • Brigades could have nation-specific names. A German Armoured Brigade would be called a Panzer-Batallion or Panzer Abteilung, a British Infantry Brigade would be called an Infantry Brigade, but a American one could be called an Infantry Regiment. (Or whatever.) This would make it easier to implement their automatic naming convention, too. There could also be nation-specific numbering for them. (Although using roman numbers would still not be possible.)
  • Nation-specific Law names. (Although I'm not yet sure how this could be used...)

Note that this wouldn't mean you (PI) have to fill up all this. I'm only asking for the option. We have a very active community here, and if we get the tools to work with, we will fill in the blank sheets in no time!

Like the idea, wonder how the moderators would feel about it? It would give a great boost to the "flavour" of the game

Go slan, our great green modding lizard god! Or something.

Anyway, I love this idea. In the SF dev. diaries, there were talk of increased immersion. But instead of nation-specific brigade names, we got »You sunk my battleship«-jokes (yes, that really annoyed me).

Although, I think »Panzer-Regiment x«would be the most appropriate term.

A great, great idea. I would bet that we won't see it for a patch, but I hope that Johan would agree that it sounds pretty feasible for the next expansion. This is where a small feature would send modders (and players) into modding heaven.

Sure... all that Paradox needs to do it to provide the engine support for it... the modding community will do the rest.

I'm glad the idea has support :) It is definitely not patch-material, but I'm sure HoI3 will get at least one more expansion! (And I have sooooo many other ideas )

it would save me a ton of time not having to rename every new corps into "XX. Armeekorps", then not play for three days and try to remember whether it was "XXXI. Armeekorps" or "XXXII. Armeekorps". yeah, I'm kind-of obsessive about that sort of thing. I once renamed every single Soviet infantry division into "Rifle division".
other ideas that come to mind:
Ghurka instead of mountaineer
Festungsdivision instead of garrison (yes, I know they were not quite the same, but still...)

great idea.

Note that programing roman numbers (XXXI., etc.) would be considerably harder than sticking with the arab numbers. But having "1. Armeekorps" instead of "1. Corps" when you play the germans would be a step in the right direction :)

Nation localized units names would be awesome too (german pioniere, British Royal Engineers etc. directly in the production panel).

Just wanted to channel in Oswik's idea of nation-specific pictures too! It is already possible to use nation-specific pictures for unit models, but it would be nice to have nation-specific (and even date-specific) pictures to techs as well, like "small_arms_technology_1", "GER_small_arms_technology_3", etc.!
