United States of America
What do Americans call their country?
There are various short forms that are used, and they tend to vary by region:
America, the USA, US, and United States. There may be others. Foreigners also call our land, "the States". Calling us "the States" is rarely done by Americans.
The locals in this time period felt more of an allegiance to their state then to the nation itself. This did not change till after the civil war (1865) when people started to think of themselves as Americans (as opposed to New Yorkers, Virginians, etc.)
The official name of course is "The United States of America". In the EU period, however, the "The" is replaced with "These" to place emphasis on "States" as independent sovereign entities that have joined together in a common cause. The Declaration of Independence used the terms "the thirteen United States of America".
You may wish to use "These United States of America" to signify the differences in opinion regarding the union in this time period.
