After a long break I've come back to hoi3, updated to TFH (that's how long it's been since last playing!) and started playing Nat China as I remember it being tons of fun. My memories were correct! I've been happily reuniting the warlords, comm China, shanxi, yunnan, guanxi and xibei through the simple means of grinding them to dust! I added Tibet (for the hell of it) and Sinkiang (for the border with Soviet Union so I can get resources without convoys) and I've just finished pushing Japan off the mainland, now things are getting a little weird:
1. In Korea, Japan had a fleet of transports with a single light cruiser escort that was based in one of the northern ports. I spent weeks port-striking with my 3 TAC aircraft which destroyed their ORG and started to reduce their strength, but no sinking ships!? Is this normal? Is there a more effective way of sinking weak, defenceless fleets in ports? In the end I managed to sink one transport by sitting my light cruiser & destroyer fleet in the sea zone outside the port and then taking the port province with my army thus forcing them out. They then rebased at the next Korean port and the process was repeated over and over with the end result of still only two sunk out of four with the cruiser still going strong! It's worth noting that although I'm pretty confident with using land forces, air and sea have always seemed difficult to master. Is there a recommended guide for naval/air forces that goes into detail such as which type of orders to use, etc.
2. The above light cruiser has now detached from the remaining transports and is sitting in the small island port to the south of the Korean peninsula, the one that seems to be connected, albeit by a river crossing, to the Korean mainland. It seems that this now means that I can't cross onto that island to capture the port which leaves a window for Japan to counter attack through there at their leisure. I know that land units can cross to the island as a Jap HQ retreated there, I engaged and destroyed them from the adjoining province, but now when I order infantry to the island they seem to set off marching for a day or two and then stop, cancel all orders and do nothing. Is this normal? If it's because of the cruiser, see 1 above for why this could take a looooong time to fix!
3. Lastly, I'm preparing to invade Taiwan and need to gain air superiority (I know there's a fleet of 3 carriers and 1 destroyer in the Taiwanese port opposite mine and I'm itching to take them on with such a pathetic escort!) but neither my INT's or TAC's at the closest airbase will carry out their air superiority or port strike orders. They have nearly full ORG but only 2 days of supplies and fuel. Although they're not being flagged as short of fuel/supplies, this is the only reason I can see for them sitting there saying "port strike (resting)" for weeks at a time. I've checked the infrastructure all around for damage, but all seems fine. Their supply level never seems to change up or down. In fact, whilst spinning the clock to see if the problem would sort itself out, Jap TAC's did a port strike against my fleet (sitting in the port opposite Taiwan waiting for the invasion to start) from a Taiwanese airbase and my fighters never even took off! Incidentally, they also managed to do a hell of a lot more damage in one raid than I could manage, but I guess that could be their tech advantage? I'm stumped...
Any help would be very gratefully received, or at least confirmation that it's not just me!
