But who is the only undefeated marshall of Napoleon, not Suchet, not Lannes, not Bernadotte, but Davout!

Where did Lannes loose? (don't doubt you, just wondering:))
Thought Aspern-Essling shouldn't count, as he got his legs smashed and had to leave the battle... he managed to hold back the austrians for a long while there, with a small force. He loved the army and the battlefield and proved himself time and again, despite being wounded many times and often facing great odds. He had a vital role at Friedland, where he held off far greater numbers of Russians long enough for Bonaparte to bring up reinforcements and crush them against the River Alle.
At Aspern-Essling where his advance II Corps held off, against massive odds, the Austrian army while Bonaparte desperately tried to get more troops across the swollen, flooded Danube.

Occupying a strongpoint in the village of Essling, Lannes denied the Austrians for two days. Unfortunately, during the fighting withdrawal he had his legs crushed by a cannonball and, after the amputation of the left one, died of fever.

The army, and Bonaparte himself, wept at the loss.

Concerning Davout... as a young general he was captured by the prussians, but exchanged... the Prussians would certainly regret that... he was also caught by the royal Navy, but again set free.:D

Napoleontic era? Suvorov. (surprise! :p ) I even find it somewhat disappointing he and Nappy never met on the field of battle...

Suvorov fought against Massena at the second battle of Zurich. André Massena won that battle, thought greatly outnumbered. Suvorov was really kicked in that battle actually... Massena destroyed the Legend Suvarov, who died only months later...He got alot of the blame for the failure, thought it wasn't all his fault.

I would be wary against characterizing Surovov's brilliance by the second battle of Zurich. To many people, using that as an example that Massena was superior, is similar to claims that Wellington was the better general because of Waterloo, which was a fluke victory for the Allies against a Napoleon that was greatly diminished from his peak.

I would rank Surovov very highly (If not in the same class as Davout or Napoleon). Massena was great too, I just think its unfair to take an example right before his death. ;)

Messena had his moments, both extraordinary good and very bad. A bit like Mc Arthur :)

Heh. Well, my point was that when he actually made it to a battle, he performed averagely. But he seemed to have a sixth sense for deliberately avoiding battle, when his presence was most needed...Even doing the opposite of specific orders from Napoleon.

Still, Sweden did pretty well. Napoleon got rid of his worst general and Sweden got their best king!
:)

The two really didn't like each other. I mean, REALLY didn't like each other.

True, I wasn't saying that Massena was better than Suvorov, but Suvorov made a big mistake at that battle... He sent 58.000 men first to ensure Massena couldn't flee. What Massena did was to send a small force to delay Suvorov's main army. While the small force did that, Massena attacked and scattered the Russian army under Korsakov (?). After Korsakov been beaten, he marched and crushed Suvorov's main army. Thought was Korsakov beeing a little bit idiotic, it was Suvorov's fault as he let Korsakov lead the army.

i agree. admiral must not be named... and Nelson is only a english legend, he never really exist and trafalgar was a false myth :D

about trafalgar did you know that even now, french navy officers cannot be called "mister" or "sir" because of trafalgar. All the other officers, in the army, are called Mon capitaine (short for Mister the captain), and only the navy officers are only called by their rank (captain). It's often confusing for soldiers adressing to a navy officer.
and all this only because of Trafalgar. Navy officers could be called mister again only after glorious victory against the royal navy.

Wow... another proof of what Britain has done to ruin France...:p

french navy was the most traditionalist part of the french army. the officers don't talk about the French Navy, they call it "La Royale". french sailor in ceeremony suit wore a black tie because of trafalgar (i've one since i'm a reservist), and their shirt has 7 line because of seven minor victories just after trafalgar.
Every time a french ship pass nearby st helene, they stop and make a ceremony on the former grave of the Emperor.
French officer are very proud of the french navy past (except trafalgar and toulon), but the funny thing is they are much more eager to rembember the deeds of the privateer like Surcouf or Dugay-Trouin than those of regular french officers.

but it's not the point of this thread and darknight will kick my ass if i continue ;)

So does 500 million more people....Now, this is discrimination

I agree, no admirals here (we would have to give honours to the British for this one and I don't feel like it). Just superbe french generals and some not so fine Russian, Austrian, Prussian, British :)

my fav napoleon general

personally and i dont know why, i like marshal ney. even though he is blamed for making some mistakes during the battle of waterloo, i saw a documentary on it and it made ney look really i dunno, valiant. i can totally imagine this guy yelling his brains out ordering the last french cavalry charge against the allied forces and going crazy. i just sympathize with this guy.

Some mistakes is way to soft :)
He made several cruical mistakes, but in my opinion, Napoleon knew Neys capabilites so he shouldn't have tasked him with the entire wing.
