A.I. completely cheats when it comes to free units and research.

I've gone games were I had slashed everything in Naval, treasury, trading and stablity... and the A.I. still beats me in my 3 focused areas

Perhaps it was just bad luck or something.... Currently playing a game with Hamburg (see my sig) and I am ahead of about 90% of the AI's in every single technology level, and have every single available CoT packed with merchants.... (some of them are still using men at arms, while I use condotta infantry LOL)

soon after claiming some american indian lands, I can actually maintain an army big enough to compete with Burgandy and Denmark.... In fact I just force vassaled Denmark......

Other than the AI nearly begging to become my vassal, 2.1 is much better.....

and as someone mentioned previously, it does run smoother and is more stable than 1.3

How are you so good at trading? Personally I can never seem to form a monopoly in Europe or get anywhere for that matter

I see your playing a tiny country and having so much trade income (40 as Hamburg? :D ) would definatly allow you to progress like mad in technology

Personally I love NA. NA and Magna Mundi gave me a reason to stick with EU3 rather than going back to EU2. Sure the AI cheats, but it has always done so. If you want a challenge you have to play against humans. Otherwise as soon as you hit the 5-10 province size you can basically expand carefully without much risk. However single player does seem engaging and fun despite lacking a real challenge.

I was always horrible at trading, but with NA I'm a lot better. For starters, go research gov. tech 1 and pick one of the two trade NI. Then invest EVERYTHING on trade tech. Use the autosend feature and get one CoT at a time, when you have 1 at 5, then go for another.

When you have a Trade tech quite ahead of your time, invest in Gov tech again till you hit 5. As second national idea pick the other trade tech (now you should have +10 TE and +10 compete chance with both NIs). Spend all tech again on Trade and continue conquering CoT.

Once you lead on trade and your merchants stay at 5 at every CoT, you can improve on other techs.

ATM, I have 5 at every CoT I can, and I have monopolies in 5 or six (they don't last much, though).

This is precisely what you need to do, to trade well in 2.1, hell perhaps in any version.

The only real crappy thing about NA is the colonial range, which can severely hinder some nations.... but truthfully it makes more sense, so even while it reduces fun (in some cases) its more realistic.... no more mega campaigns with Brunei!!!

The AI armies/research are really out of control. I was playing as Castille and had more than double the income and less than half the army/navy size of France. Even though I put nearly all the rest of my income into tech, they were still researching about 30% faster than me. At one point, they declared war on me and had over 400 regiments in my territory alone (200 were in one army).

Definitely frustrating, and I've stopped playing until its fixed. I do like many of the new features, though.

hmm...a little weird situation but did you trade and not colonize. Trade affects your income more than colonies. So france could of had 100 colonies and still make half your income. When your total provinces exceed 85, iicr, research comes free to each new province you add. So france could of been getting free research for a couple of provinces.

You can play NA without the latest patch , not that AI does not cheat but this is nothing you can not handle by editing ( free troop maintenance , unique religion with 500% compete chance etc ) ; after all it is not a big investment 20e are only a week's cigs.
