Playing as Spain I decided to colonise the southern part of North America, from the Rio Grande all along the Gulf coast and then up the Atlantic coast to the River Potomac, except for Florida.

I called the SW USA and Northern Mexico territory New Spain, the Mississippi New Aragon and named the SE USA Los Coronados after my first Conquistador. When I grant them independence New Aragon turns into Louisiana and Los Coronados becomes the United States, neither of which are very Hispanic . . .

Would be nice to have an option to try to name such territories, or at least veto names that don't make sense.

Also ended up with two Perus, a former Portuguese colony and a Spanish (still) colony.

I think when a nation breaks free, it should have a dynamic name to their culture and such. Louisiana, a French name, should be named for the current king of the nation, such as was when real life Louisiana happened. Provinces like Charleston should take on the same effect. Virginia as well.

I like your idea. Though Virginia and Charleston were names given when they were loyal colonies as was the case with los Angeles and San Diego, the names were retained after independence. The United States makes sense if colonies rebel against Great Britain (or England), but not if they are Spanish, French or Portuguese. At least lets have Los Estados Unidos or Los Coronados.

Louisiana was similarly a suitable name for a French colony. On breaking free former colonists might retain that name or come up with something new ?

How about options: retain existing name, a suggested alternate name relevant to region or culture and an option to create a new name ?

More culture-specific names for colonial nations would be awesome. There are a few mods that do this, it'd be pretty cool to implement it. Louisiana is one that always gets me, since the name relies on somebody named "Louis" being involved, which doesn't make a lot of sense if, say, Qing colonizes the area.
