In EU, most provinces appear to be labeled with their native names instead of their English or Latin equivalents. (E.g. Jylland instead of Jutland.) I think this is a good choice since it adds more flavour to the game.

However, this naming convention is not very consistent... In Germany, we have Western and Eastern Pommerania, whose native names are Vorpommern and Hinterpommern, Saxony should be Sachsen, Bavaria - Bayern, Bohemia - Böhmen. I am sure there are many other examlpes. Other provinces in Germany do bear native names. (E.g. Thuringen is not called Thuringia.) IMO they should all be relabeled to bear their native names.

By native you mean e.g.

'Warsaw' 'Warszawa', etc, naming them in the same language as the country controlling it? What about if a province is taken by another power? Would the language change to suit the occupying power?

I think Paradox wanted to make everything more or less uniform. Doing it this way will cause less confusion for people who are not well versed in history / the correct ethnic names.

The ideal solution would of course be to display the name whoever controls the province uses. This is something to consider for EU2.

However, I would be satisfied if the names were simply those used by the controlling powers in 1492. I see no reason whatsoever to call Vorpommern 'Western Pommerania', etc.

That makes no sense. What about if you're playing an 18th century scenario. This game covers 300 years you know.

Believe me, I've been pestering the developers on this subject since February. In short, it's too late now so let it lie.

I agree, it makes little sense. But at least we would not have to see 'Eastern Pommerania'.

Well, it's certainly too late to implement some kind of dynamic naming scheme (although as I said before, this would be a welcome feature in EU 2), but I don't see why they could't spend a couple of minutes to rename a few provinces on the map.

Mostly because the map is 500 Mb document that takes a few days to change a name in and then compress down to 10mb.

Besides, I'd call that province 'Svenska Pommern'.

If you say so. I shudder at the very thought of opening that picture in PhotoShop! ;)

Western Pommerania, yes, Svenska Pommern is its proper name. :) Let's make that possible in the sequel someday... :D

Hello, Johan. I am not too sure about exactly where in this forum I have to place this note, but I will try here, as we are talking about the provinces in the map. Last night I had a look at the map of the BG version of the game. I have not had a chance to look at the whole map of the computer version of EU, so perhaps I am going to talk about something that might be corrected, but...

Just in case: I know that you have changed the name of some provinces in Spain, and Euskadia is now Navarre (I read this somewhere else in this forum), but does the kingdom of Navarre have a coastline? It certainly does in the BG map, and it even has a port, which is (if I remember rightly) San Sebastian. Well, if that is the case, I am afraid to say that it is a terrible mistake! That coastline, which corresponds to the present-day Basque Country in Northern Spain, was conquered by Castile in 1207, thus barring Navarrese access to the sea.

I imagine that by now it is too late to change the map, but believe me; no Spaniard with more than a slight notion of history will understand why on Earth the Navarrese have San Sebastian in or after 1492. Bear in mind that I am not a computers expert, but would it be very difficult to introduce this change in the map? If it is, well, please take it as a suggestion for EU2.

However, this is not a demerit of the excellent work you are all doing with this game. Again, congratulations!

Martin

Yes. It also has a navy which has been seen cruising as far away as the North Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean in different games that I have played.
