I think it is unneccecary to name your armies.

It may not be necessary, but it is definitely a option that we should have. I want to be able to give my armies and navies names that reflect my empire. If an army is supposed to defend my North American colonies, I want to have it called something like "The North American Army", not the army of the Baltics, the Moldavian Regiment or the Hapsburg Reserves. It makes it far easier to remember which army is responsible for what actions, and it gives the game a far more realistic feel.

There is nothing as ludicrous as playing Russia, making nice to Sweeden and the Teutonic Knights while focusing on Persia, Arabia and India, and finding that my armies are called the Army of Finland, or the Army of the Baltics when I neither own those territories nor have any territorial ambitions on them.

It's possible to enter a name-pool where the names of new armies are selected from.
I mess with this pool whenever I play a minor. I hate seeing a dozen different Bavaria Regiments composing my armed forces. Still, messing with a pool is an acceptable solution to me, I'd rather Paradox spend time on the Austrian/Burgundian issue.

I was quite sure I red *somewhere* it was in.
It would be lovely, though, so I wouldnt have "New Slesia" as the capital of Minnesotta.

Yeah, I can change them in save game files, but by the same accord, I can also get a pirate copy of the game. I dont want to do either.

Yes, they are quite different, but I could argue that "the game isnt worth _____(amount) anyway".
In too many cases it is true (I really hope it wont hold true for EU 2, though, I am going to buy it after all) thats why piracy is so popular. Anyone that can afford a decent computer can afford to buy games as well, but not everyone is willing to succumb to the marketing policies of the game makers.
All too often it happens that the promises about the product are lies, or "convenient modifications of truth", so you cannot even sue them (anyone heard about Ultima Online?).
In what way is that different than piracy? Very few.

This is something that I'd definitely like to see in EUIII, if it's not in EUII.

Editing savegame files, or the .csv files, does not do what is wanted: allowing the naming/renaming of provinces and armies during game play to reflect the 'current' situation.

It's common sense: I don't believe that the Europeans kept the original names fore the provinces they conquered, nor do I believe that a force titled 'Home Fleet' should keep that name when redeployed to Gibraltar.

Ach! This sucks that it isn't in. But I can understand, in a way. Fonts in DirectX are no fun. And, IIRC, there is no other interface in the game which has you type in anything, so anything they put in, would have to be written from scratch.

But as long as you can save and reload without loosing a monarch's events and having other things screw up, it's no big deal really. Just always name your save aaa.eug or something, and keep it open in a text editor in the background. You need to rename an army? Save the game, alt-tab, ctrl-f (find), type in the army's current name, and it takes you right to it. Then, type in the new name, save...back to EU and reload. I can do this (and did do it in EU before I found out about the events bug) in like 15 seconds.

Yes, I know it can be done that way - but having to do it that way is, frankly, poor.

As I said, I'm not expecting to see it in EUII - but it would be one of my 'Would Like to See' items in EUIII.

When you save and reload, the remaining events of a good monarch do not occur. So it's not a good idea to quit the game one year after Gustavus Adolphus rises to the throne, and then reload...;)
In addition, I think you lose special events like "increased province revenues for 12 months" when you save and reload somewhere in these 12 months.

When I tried to edit a game file that I'd been playing it wouldn't save - I got a message something like "unable to access - file in use by another program". So I had to completely shut down EU then start again after I'd edited.
I wasn't using the .eug file though - that always comes up as wingdings if I accidentally try to open it.
Am I missing something? What do you use as a text editor?

Weird, Owl...never had that problem. I don't think the file is kept open by EU unless it's saving or loading. If it is it might be a bug or something.

(Edit) Oops. Missunderstood what you were saying. Sorry. Don't open the eug file, open the other one with the same name and a differnt extension. That should be in text.

Heh...oh yeah...I should mention that I have a fancy-shmancy text editor (UltraEdit) which can be set to automaticaly reload a file if it's been changed outside the editor. Else, you'd better make sure you reload the save file before editing and saving it. There could be trouble otherwise :D

The Heart Has Reasons of which...

No, I don't really have a rational explanation for it but...I just would get a kick out of naming my armies. Fleets too...

I can't imagine its that too large of a touch-up. When we double-click on the title of an army in that left-hand box thing, it opens up a dialog box and we type in the new name...
