So I decided to play a game as the Nestorian Bedouins of Socotra. With this in mind, what should I name my kids? The standard names for Bedouins are all very Islamic, while my starting character and his son is named Philemon and Athanasios.

After looking in the game files, I'm leaning towards Coptic Egyptian names like Aaron, Krystafer, and Youkhannan and such. Would this be a good fit for a Christian Arab?

I'm not particularly well-versed in the intricacies of early relations between Arab Muslims, Arab Jews and Arab Christians in the Peninsula during this period, but is there anything stopping you from just using Arabic names like Yusuf and Ishaq that both refer to figures in Islam and are related to their equivalents in the Torah and Bible?

Of course I'm using those, but I'm eliminating ones like Muhammad, Mubarak, Mirza, and so on. From what I know, Arab Jews didn't have the same names as their Muslim neighbors, and I'm assuming Arab Christians have different names too. I just Googled some Arab Christian tribes from this time period and they seemed to have very different names than in the game files for Bedouins. So far, I feel like Coptic names offer a nice balance of Hellenic and Arab influenced names

If you look at pre-Islamic Arab Christians like the Ghassanids, Lakhmids and the Tanukhids they all had stereotypical Arabic names, like al-Consonantsandvowels, Ghassan, Amir or Abu.

Throw some Greek stuff in there, keep the mostly Arab stuff too. Perhaps try Arab-like names but spelled in a more Christian style? Instead of "al-Mundhir ibn al-Harith III" (one of the more famous Ghassanid kings) try "Mundikos Alharimon" (a complete asspull but it sounds good to me) or something?

Most Arabic names have Preislamic origins. "Muhammad", for example, was the name of the man who founded Islam. Thus, he could not have had an Islamic name, since he was named before Islam. For the most part, the only names which are specifically Islamic are ones that have "Allah" in them. If these secular names do not fully fit your taste, then look into Aramaic names, as Aramaic was/is the language used by Christians in the Middle East, and many Christian Arabs adopted it partially.

Yeah that's why I'm sticking to mostly Coptic names, because instead of the Greek Christophoros, in Coptic it's Krystafer, and instead of Petros, it's Boutros. It's a nice mix between what you mentioned. But I will try out some names from the tribes you've mentioned, as they've often has Greek versions of their names. Heck maybe even try some of my own :D

But many of those names are just regular Arabic names. There have been a lot of people called Muhammad before the Prophet, for example. It's just that the name became crazy popular after the introduction of Islam.

Yeah but by this time period, names like Muhammad are synonymous with Islam, so I would think that non Muslim Arabs might steer a bit away from that. I do like some of the other Arab names, like Hasan, Ali, Youkhanna, and Ibrahim.

Thanks for the info, I didn't really consider that actually

So I know Abdullah/Abdallah is out of the picture, and I personally didn't really like names with Abu either. Doing some research into the names, it seems that most of the names are pre Islamic in origin. So Prince Mirza and Prince Murad is coming right up, along with Stephanos

"Allah" is the name of a Preislamic deity as well, representing the sky and, often, the moon. He is cognate to Canaanite El, Akkadian Ilu, and Ethiopic/Cushitic Waaq. Similar to early Somali writings, the preislamic deity's name is used as a translation for the Abrahamic one. This is fairly accurate, as the Canaanite polytheistic deity El was the original deity worshiped in Judaism, a henotheistic variant of the Canaanite faith.

I wouldn't trust the Coptic names in-game. Many of them are Arabized, and do not actually represent Coptic, or Egyptian Arabic for that matter. While they're very much suitable for Arabs, the Egyptians would not have it be "Boutros". Furthermore, it was still a common custom among the Copts to use pre-Christian names. Here's a list of proper Coptic names:

Aharu, Aru, Apamun, Apanub, Amun, Anub_Apapa, Apamun, Apanub, Mesu, Mina, Pamun, Panub, Papnuti, Patape, Pamun, Penuti_Panuti, Pigol, Pishoi, Psote, Unefer, Ruwais, Shenuta_Shenuti, Sidhom, Usiri_User_Aser

In this, an underscore represents different spellings of the same name. A few of these might be recognizable, such as "Shenuta_Shenuti", which is "Shenouda" when Arabic and Greek spelling customs are removed (such as "ou", which is functionally identical to "u").

Females:
Amunet, Asenet_Asenit_Asenat, Ese, Miryam, Padiyat_Padiyet, Sena, Sekhmet, Tanuti, Tawaret_Taweret, Titi

As for Aramaic names:

Male: Abaya_Abaye_Abayi_Abba Abdima_Avdima_Avdimi Akhina Asa Avira Khama Khanin_Khanina_Khaninai_Khinena_Hanina Dimi Dunanu Idan Ila Kaiapha Karna Nahur Nekhunya Nehor_Nehorai Nur Oran Rakhim_Rahim Raz Saba_Sabah Sami Sagi Shai Shama Sheraga_Shraga Sima Tauma Talmai Timai Tolmai Ukba Ishu

One more Coptic name, only for Christians:

Gerges_Girgis (George)

Basically, where the default Coptic names have a "B" is often a "P" in Coptic, but Arabic (for the most part) doesn't have a "P" outside of Egypt, leading to it becoming a "B"

I wouldn't actually. There are plenty of good Arab Christian names that start with Abd.

For example:

Abdalmassih - Servant of the Messiah
Abdalyasu - Servant of Jesus
Abdalillah - Servant of (the Christian) God

So I know Abdullah/Abdallah is out of the picture, and I personally didn't really like names with Abu either. Doing some research into the names, it seems that most of the names are pre Islamic in origin. So Prince Mirza and Prince Murad is coming right up, along with Stephanos

I wouldn't completely discount those; they're not specifically Islamic either. Muhammad's father was named Abdullah, for example.

Here's a list I think you can use freely:

Even in modern times my Syrian, Egyptian and Iraqi friends instantly know what religion someone is once they introduce themselves, sometimes they narrow it down to tribe and village (or their grandfathers' village, in case of more mobile people) which amazes me to no end. Some of it is down to dialectics and phonetics, but the naming conventions and surnames also play a big role there. What was written above - about Muhammad and Abd Allah being not exclusively Muslim is correct, but in the timeframe of the game I'd assume that any Abd (the root meaning 'servant') + any of the Qur'anic names of God (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_Islam) would already so strondly be connected with the religion of the Prophet, that it might be strange to use it for Arabic Christians.

As for specifically Socotran names, I am far from an expert and cannot help, especially since the al-Mahrah tribe living in Socotra not only has a dialect of Arabic - they also have a semitic Soqotri language...
