Why won't you let me have achievements enabled for using modded namelists. They don't even break the game. I just want my space stations to use funni names instead of the really lame vanilla ones.

Paradox pls

It's because of multiplayer. All players need to have a namelist installed to see the proper ship names so the game changes the checksum to ensure they do. On the bright side you can rename pretty much every named thing in the game by clicking the name.

Of course this does also bring up the debate on why you can't get achievements if your checksum has changed. I get that it's to prevent people getting achievements with cheat mods, but it's also a case of choosing whether to prosecute the guilty or exonerate the innocent. I'd argue that for example someone who plays with Starnet or Startech as their only mod actually deserves any achievements way more than anyone who plays without mods. And then there's the awkward fact that you can unlock any achievement you want with savegame editing.

In light of all that I believe it would be best to give up on mods restricting achievements and have ironman mode be the only limiting factor.

That makes me wonder why there can't be a fallback naming system.

I wish I could have modded portraits and ships too. I just want to expand the visuals of my galaxy!

That's a valid point too. The game already has fallback options for shipsets, but those are defined in the shipset, so if you're missing that file ... I honestly don't know what would happen.

I see no reason why the devs couldn't have a universal fallback option for all the graphics and namelists. There doesn't even need to be a namelist per se. The game could just display the name of the ship size or leader type. Or the game could only refer to the namelist when selecting a random name, but then the name gets saved in the gamestate and in the save as that specific name, rather than as a reference to the namelist.
