Hi, my copy of EUII is going to arrive by monday. Since it's vacation for two months, i have plenty of time to play the game. I've never played EUI.

What nation do you reccomend me to play with first? To learn the game basics etc.

Thanks in advance,

DIITG

Edit: I just noticed that i misposted it. It should be in the general EUII discussion. Moderators should move it.

;) they will move it shortly.

I think the best to start the game is Mother Russia. Lot's of oppurtunity and not much can go wrong.

No, Russia can be tricky. Start with France in 1492, then Spain 1492. Those are very strong and allow for a bunch of errors.

Pay a careful look to Fodoron's Newbie guide and Carlec's thread in the FAQs. Carlec's is about France 1419, so it's a good "third tutorial game". ;)

Please, I started my first game as Vijayanagar! Builds character! Puts hair on your chest!

In all seriousness, however, I have heard that France in the 1492 Scenario is the easiest. I, personally, have only played as Scotland, England, Teutonic Order, St. John's Knight's Hospitaller, Brandenburg, Byzantium, and Vijayanagar in the Grand Campaign (1419 and Up). I've only done well with Vijayanagar and the Teutonic Order, also, so my opinion is virtually pointless.

Still though, if you want to do the Grand Campaign, I suggest Austria or Brandenburg. Austria inherits a bunch of stuff and Brandenburg inherits Prussia (If it still exists). But as stated before, 1492 is a lot more stable than 1419, so I would probably second 1492 France.

Castille, England or Portugal in GC.
Portugal is good for learning the colonization aspects :nods:

But the best overall, IMO, is France in in 1492.

The easiest ones are France in 1492

a good start in the GC 1419.. would be.. Castilla or Portugal... they are strong enough...

or... England or Austria...

fun nations with a lot of potential.. (though hard in the beginning) in 1419.. are: Ottomans, Sweden and France or Moskow>Russia

I did my first game as Norway in the GC.. ;) it was okay... I played on very easy..
then I moved on to Castile-Spain, Ottomans and Brandenburg-Preussen

have fun :)

I wouldn't start with too great a major power--there's too much going on and you'd be better off leaving them for later.

I'd recommend Sweden--just be mindful of the Ruskies.

Venice is another powerful--but not too much so--country.

I've seen China recommended before. You pretty much can't go wrong until the Events of Doom fire, after which you can only go wrong, and should quit.

But to be honest, I think your best bet would be Japan or Byzantium. :D

sadistic bastard :p why not the Incas while you'r at it?

Now realisticly, Castille/Spain I find to be a less then perfect choice for first game, since it ends up getting called into so many fronts, it can get confusing.
You'll be colonizing North Central and South America, dealing with North Africa if you have Malta, dealing with Italy if you have Naples/Sicily, dealing with France because you border it, and the Dutch revolts. Also England may jump you for control of N America too.
All this with bonus bankrupcy events ;)

I started with Norway and it's a great nation to learn the ropes with and get the "feel" of the game. You're poor, but ally with Sweden and you can have a peacefull game. Then load up as France or England in 1419 to learn how to figth with low tech. My suggestion is to play the first 50-75 years and then move start up as another country just to get the hang of it. Austria in 1419 is also good, as you will get a lot of land for free, you have a decent alliance waiting for you to join (Hungary/Bohemia), and as long as you don't go on an annexation spree people won't bother with you.

Wel... my first game was as Novgorod, do I get more chest hair? Seriously, any of the above suggestions are fine. For 1492, my suggestion is France, and for 1419, Castile, or Portugal if you desire a slightly more peaceful path. Although considering you're playing vanilla, you could, as Portugal, turn on Castile and conquer several rich, same-culture, same-religion provinces. ;)

Novgorod was my third game, I believe. The first two were rather short, because I got pissed off at, in the first game, Granada thoroughly owning me as Castile, and then BB wars as France. I'm not counting a game I started as Mecklenburg which lasted about three years, because I don't know when that was.

there really is no question about it. If you want to learn the game, pick France 92.
To specialize:
For colonization: Spain/Porto 1419.
For economy: Venice 1419 (possible hyperteching strategy)
For naval warfare: Netherlands later scenario.
For land warfare: Muscowy/OE 1419
For diplomacy: Austria 1419
For religious aspects: England 1419, win the HYW, get all of France and NL and go reformed. :p

I think Muscovey 1492 is better. You are quite secure and have gobs of cores to take. To start with there it's not even possible for you to use naval warfare or indeed colonization. As the game progresses you will need to start doing both of these. You have very clear cut simple goals
1) Become Russia and unite all the Russian cultured lands.
2) Expand into your cores, and gain a port
3) Expand to the siberian frontier and start colonizing there.

The only disadvantage is that it's a bit less forgiving than France - several bad mistakes could set you back a ton whereas France can survive almost anything.
