Ouch, rough to see a good slave empire fall.

I'll pour one out for you at the next slavers meeting. Meanwhile take comfort in knowing that you're now a cautionary tale about the vassal/tributary minigame and keep at it, climb back up from the ashes, it might be epic.

More specific advice, if you haven't lost the war yet, fight as sneakily as possible. Hit as many of these smaller disparate fleets as you can before they merge up into a doom stack. Once they're too big for you to defeat, you need to switch off to raiding star ports, blockading planets and fleeing when trouble comes. The idea is to keep the warscore from getting too high, if you can keep them down from 100 war score, you may end the war with a few of your vassals still in place.

After that, you're on a 10 year truce. Use it, because after that truce is done, you're going to have a wealth of hostile, belligerent neighbors who all like each other because of their shared hatred for you, any sign of weakness from you becomes a dogpile. Needless to say immediate reconquest isn't likely to be viable in that direction, but that's why space has 360 degrees.

ye the ticking warscore is insane when you have multiple vassels. Its downright silly. We have had wars of independence that go on allot longer and are much harder for both sides in the real world but in stellaris the occupation bonus they get for those worlds is insane.

Warscore should not work that way for indep wars. needs to be nurrfed i think. To stop this happening to me i my fleets are always the same.
1 Large fleet that all my vassals follow (used for launching at the enemy home world at the beginning of a war)
2 My primary fleet that i choose engagements carefully and use to mop up space ports ect
3. 10+ fleets all the same 1-3-9-27 and i use these to halt war score whenever there is a indep declaration

My problem was i didn't realize that the metal wargoal would liberate all my vassals, if i had relized i would've probably fought it out since i had a defensive pack with my biggest neighbour.
I mean i can't complain i was pretty annoyed that in my other playthroughs i had never ever had vassal try to break away so i was really happy to know ai player could do it, i guess my main problem was i didn't understand the ticking warscore and that i didn't understand i would lose all my vassals if i ceded the war.

So i am assuming it was a mistake to reject the nonagresion pacts from my previous vassals then :-s.

Probably yeah. Oh well, you live and you learn right? At least it makes for one hell of an interesting story.

Darn... well, maintain that defensive pact if you can, it might serve you well in preventing the cascading war dogpile that is our next fear. Don't be afraid to grease the wheels of diplomacy with your biggest neighbor, particularly since now you no longer look like such a formidable friend to have watching your back

As for rejecting those nonaggression pacts... yeah, you probably should have accepted some of them. If you can split their coalition you can pick them off one by one. This is definitely a set back, and if you were going for the three mountains achievement, now would be the time to scrap the game. But if you've got your former vassals wanting a nonaggression pact than you're sitting in a pretty good place to come back.

I would say never reject all of the nonaggression pacts, and if you are in a defensive pact or offered a defensive pact take it and try to maintain that defensive pact. Also if you have a few large powerful neighbors next to you, do not be afraid to approach them diplomatically and try to get them on your good side and in a defensive pact so that way if you are attacked they will come to your aid. Also take the nonaggression pact from your former vassal and try to maintain it, I think of it as a barrier around you if you have neighbors around you that you have a defensive pact/non aggression treaty with. Cause if you do then anyone who wants to attack you would have to go through your neighbors and will hopefully give you time to rebuild, and at the end of the nonaggression pact/defensive pact you can turn around and try to take over your former vassal and the bigger neighbor's unless they are more powerful then you. If they are more powerful then you, then try to renew the defensive pact/nonaggression treaty or better yet and some may agree or not agree with this - but if you can see if you can join a federation or become its ally because that will help you to I believe

I played it out for another 20 odd years, but made some fatal mistakes, namely declaring war on 2 of my previous vassals so i could help my 2 planet vassal with a rebellion.
The second was accepting an allaiance request from my 2 planet neighbour. So either im just wait till utopia to play again, or ima start a new game or i reload to my cloud save, from when i transfered my saves to my new computer.
Do rolling back to a cloud save break achievments?

1.5 will have ramifications even for this even if they do not change the Liberation War mechanics. Being in Diplomatic Relations enforces a certain Ethics drift towars the other parties. I asume with Vassals and Protectorates it will be one-way. So those Metalheads would propably turn into a much more amiciable Vassal over time. As would all the others.

Well, unless you are playing a Fanatic Xenophobe/Miltiarist or soemthing like that of course. Then all bets are off.

Pretty sure the metal head ai always hates you and spams insults... not the best to keep around, from what I can remember from my last tributary war you win either through your demands OR white peace (which puts them back under your control) best thing you could of done is attacked the metal heads homeworld and you might have had enough to white peace straight out.

Oh and with tributaries you can still declare war while they're under you... I usually do a purge of their homeworld if they revolt and keep what's left of them as a tributary (gotta pay for that insolence).
