My son and heir to the Roman Empire leaves my court for the Varangian guard, not a month after my old ruler (the grandfather) dies and my current one (the father) takes over. Wtf? Why on earth would he leave court for the Varangian Guard? And I wasn't aware your heirs could just go autonomous like that...? :S

He would of accepted an invite to their court. He like them more then you, and the Varangian guard probably really dislikes you and will revolt. Since he has your son and hier in his court and can use him as a general and imprison at will, it puts that character in a nice position when civil war breaks out.

Interesting development, makes sense if he was invited I guess.. A bit OT but I think it would be cool if there was an event where the children of Nordic and Anglo-Saxon lords could join the Varangian Guard and leave for the ERE. :D

Mind you, something similar is already in the game, if maybe accidentally. I've seen the Doge of Venice join one of the Holy Orders after I nabbed his city. He even ended up being the Grandmaster.

That would be really cool, maybe some 4th or 5th sons who have nothing to gain?

Sure, I think it would be interesting. Also if the Normans win the invasions (which they always seem to with the new patch) maybe some Saxon lords and courtiers can swell the ranks of the Varanagians l just like what happened historically. I'm not sure what the best way to implement such a feature would be.

It might be a good thing, generally people in the courts of Mercs dont marry, so having him waiting for you to die there instead of waiting for you to die in the court of an angry duke or neighbouring king means that he wont marry till youre in control of him again.
Also the Guard is probably landless so in less of a position to plot/faction to put him on the throne so less of a threat than if he'd gone elsewhere.

Give him a reason to stay then... duh.

I'm more agreeable to Frozen Predators position than yours. The heir to the throne of the Roman Empire getting antsy for the top job may be realistic - but heading to the court of some non-entity count that has no real hope of pressing his claim, then becoming heir to a bishopric (and removing himself from sucession) or getting mat-married, without that individual saying 'nah-uh, I'm out of here' or the father going justifiably berserk and vetoing everything, is pushing the line to mechanics over realism. Its also pretty much only because the game doesn't take account of actually being heir, but gets into a flap over claims & (arbitrary) pretender status.

I had my bastard daughter marry one of the Varangian Guard before. That was an event though, and she wasn't super useful to me anyway.

Why on earth would he leave court for the Varangian Guard? And I wasn't aware your heirs could just go autonomous like that...? :S

You're asking why someone would prefer to join a group of mercenary vikings instead of sitting around a roman court waiting for his father to die?
I'm sorry, as a Swede I might be biased but.. I just don't see the "why" in this : P
