As many of you already know, Kaiserreich is a mod for Hearts of Iron 2 (and I presume there's an AoD conversion) that covers the Hearts of Iron 2 timeline under 1 interesting question: What if Germany won World War 1.
Kaiserreich is one of the most comprehensive and complete mods out there. As such, it is among the best.
The good:
Kaiserreich covers a very interesting alternate history that many of us ponder. It isn't an improvement pack or a "What if the leader of Argentina died" mod. It actually has a 20 yearish back story and is a HIGHLY plausible scenario, at least compared to many other mods.
Kaiserreich likes to mix things up. One game the Russians fragment into multiple different nations and the French steamroll the Germans. Other games the Soviets claim power and go toe to toe with a victorious Germany.
The bad:
Unfortunately, although there is alot of different things, there's just TOO many to the point that after awhile it just looks like random things happening (massive SA war, Japan and Russia fighting, Germany and France fighting...ect). It's as if each section of the world is totally oblivious to each other.
All too many times, due to the map being made for European combat, the wars are slow and end in stalemates because theres alot of Asian fighting.
Most wars have too weak countries with too few units for them to really be fun. Maybe it's an ai problem but with Republican China, 12 IC, and 12 divisions I can build up a large force and crush the AoG.
Because there's too many loose ends, it's hard to get a sense of satisfaction with the game. It's as if the objective is to paint the world grey or blue or red or whatever. The randomness of the game means it has little structure.
I think this mod could be ALOT better. It doesn't feel complete, even if it is alot more complete than most. If enough work was put into it and the ai could be improved, be it through conversion to DH or with Fernando Torres, it would be a 9. Hell maybe 9.5. For now I can only award 7. Still, it is 1 of the best out there and, for a team that works for free, a masterpiece.
