I'm playing a mage and have unlocked all schools of magic. Here in my opinion what are the best and worst magic cores are.

Best Tier 1: Frost, Stone
Good Tier 2: Life, Fire, Lighting
Situationally Best Tier 3: Illusion, Gravelight, Emotion
Situationally Good Tier 4: Vigor, Force
Siituationally Decent Tier 5: Atrophy

She won't teach you until after act 1 and it requires loyalty PLUS high skill check (forget which, want to say lore)

Some random thoughts on some various cores

Atrophy is borderline useless, I picked atrophy in character creation and I heavily regret it. The basic spells allows u to minor decrease the stats of one mob, the cone version only has a useless TWO SECOND ROOT and takes away buffs. There is another spell of atrophy of a directed force which is slightly useful because it can silence. Vigor is similar to entropy but buffs instead of buffs, and due to the fact your characters are more important than mobs its slightly stronger. Vigor also suffers from small ranges which makes it difficult to get buffs going.

For some reason the atrophy spells have a really small radius for cone and line spells. So on top of having situational usefulness you cant debuff a large amount of people at once. It comes down to whether you want a situationally useful spell taking up your spell slot or do you want a frost spell which damages and debuffs.

Frost's cone spell for some reason has a really wide radius, almost double Fire's cone radius. All of frost's spells are good, the single target, the ranged aoe target, the cone, and the area spell.

Emotion has some interesting effects, where the single target makes a ally beserk, the cone prokes, the line spell debuffs, and the area of effect spell makes all enemies asleep. This core is basically better than atrophy in every way and similar enough there is zero reason to take atrophy. The one thing is that for some reason Obsidan makes unlocking sigils and accents difficult things to find.

Gravelight is interesting because the spells drain health and deal extra damage to bane. I did not find it useful as I was not a front liner, except the cone spell which deals a lot of dmg to bane but does not give health back. If i roll a spellsword I would pick up gravelight as my goto though.

Illusion is just a bit wierd. I feel like there is not a lot of coherence in the spells, but the cone spell deal "raw" damage which I assume no one has resistances to.

also playing a smartass mage, and the atrophy is useless pretty much

gravelight however... buff the spell with bloodmagic and you deal massive damage to both you and foe, but all dmg you deal is returned back so you will actually heal, gravelight aoe spells are also things that make your mage a tank, and it kicks ass :D

when watching a couple of playthroughs i thought that the control life core would give the same effect, but the spell power was given to gravelight

and learning the spell from eb is easy, just talk to her, and make her bend the knee, they are all pretty cooperative if you assert your power :)
