Hey guys,

I have a lot of question for DW 5.2 and don't want spam the foum with threads, so I will collect them here.

1. What are exactly the effects of having a country in my sphere of influence? I noticed 0.05 magistrates, 1 diplomatic skill and a CB if some interacts with the country (not sure what interactions count). Anything else? Any effect on the smaller country in the sphere?

2. Under what conditions does a country leaves a sphere of influence? Maybe something about military size or income compared to "overlord"?

3. What does Diplomatic Skill do? I noticed a small increase in yearly relations. Does it also increase the likelihood for my diplomatic offers being accepted?

4. What are the effects of tolerance? Positive and negative tolerance scale the revolt risk, negative tolerance the tax income. Anything else? Is the difference between 1 and 5 tolerance only -4 revolt risk?

5. Does the idea Land of Oppurtinity increase settlement growth in nomad lands as well?

6. The national idea Excellent Shipwrights gives 2 maneuver for leaders. Does this apply to general as well or only to admirals?

7. Lack of naval patrols affects tax income, but not everywhere. Some naval zones stay patrolled even when there was no ship in for a month or longer, for example the chinese coast line. Why?

More to come in the future.

Hey guys,

That's everything. (And that's actually quite a lot.)

2. Under what conditions does a country leaves a sphere of influence? Maybe something about military size or income compared to "overlord"?
Yes - an army more than about 10-20% of the size of the overlord's is enough to break the sphere relationship.

3. What does Diplomatic Skill do? I noticed a small increase in yearly relations. Does it also increase the likelihood for my diplomatic offers being accepted?
Yes.

4. What are the effects of tolerance? Positive and negative tolerance scale the revolt risk, negative tolerance the tax income. Anything else? Is the difference between 1 and 5 tolerance only -4 revolt risk?
Negative tolerance increases stability cost (before percentage-based modifiers) by 10 ducats per step.

6. The national idea Excellent Shipwrights gives 2 maneuver for leaders. Does this apply to general as well or only to admirals?
Admirals only, as far as I know.

7. Lack of naval patrols affects tax income, but not everywhere. Some naval zones stay patrolled even when there was no ship in for a month or longer, for example the chinese coast line. Why?
Because a fleet exerts a "patrol effect" based on its size (but always at least covering the sea zone it's in, or the sea zone that the port it's in opens onto).

Thanks for the answers so far.

8. What exactly is affected by AI agresssiveness? The threshold of army size etc. the AI decides to declare war on the player? Or also for wars between AI countries leading to a more peaceful world in general?

9. How can I predict best terrain modifiers for the attacker in a battle? Playing in terrain map mode and wait for the tooltip for each province to see if mountains, hill or plains are the dominant terrain?

Tolerance has a number of implications: provincial stability costs, revolt risk, I think it might affect tax too (don't remember), growth rate, etc.

Diplomatic Skill, in addition to what grommile said, makes inheriting PUs more likely.

AI aggressiveness mostly affects how likely the AI is to start wars without a CB or without a very strong CB. Lower AI aggressiveness generally leads to the AI expanding in "saner" ways (cores, missions etc).

You want to attack on farmland or plains, and defend on mountains or hills (especially if a river or strait is involved).

10. How does cultural tradition translate to advisors? I read somewhere you need 91 tradition to get a guaranteed 5 star advisor with a chance on a 6 star. Is this true and are values for lower stars known? For example I need a 4 star for a decision, when it is save to recruit him?

Yes it's true. No clue on the other margins, but I think 80ish, maybe a bit lower, should guarantee 4 star.

I'm not 100% on this, but I use 20 CT steps as rough guidelines for which levels are possible. 20-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, 80-90 and 90+ works most of the time. I'm not even sure if it's hard-coded intervals or some kind of normal distribution used - but higher within a span seems to give the better advisor more reliably.

2. Under what conditions does a country leaves a sphere of influence? Maybe something about military size or income compared to "overlord"?
From what i've been able to figure out, military, economy and territory size are all three taken into account on this matter. If one of these parameters is too high comparing to the "overlord", the sphere of influence is canceled. As far as I know, you'll need 3 provinces in order to be able to place an OPM under your sphere of influence.

3. What does Diplomatic Skill do? I noticed a small increase in yearly relations. Does it also increase the likelihood for my diplomatic offers being accepted?
The Diplomatic Skill also add "power" to the 'offer gift' diplomatic action, helps electors vote for you in the HRE and globally helps every diplomatic move a little bit.

4. What are the effects of tolerance? Positive and negative tolerance scale the revolt risk, negative tolerance the tax income. Anything else? Is the difference between 1 and 5 tolerance only -4 revolt risk?
Also affects population growth in cities.

5. Does the idea Land of Oppurtinity increase settlement growth in nomad lands as well?
The calculation for the settlements growth rate in nomad provinces is the same as the calculation for the colonies growth rate, except that it is divided by 10.
Actually, I haven't tested that precisely, but I know the National Focus helps (even nomads one). So my best guest is 'yes'.
Anyway, you just have to save a game where you have a settlement, change one of your NI and end the month to see the difference in settlement growth rate.

7. Lack of naval patrols affects tax income, but not everywhere. Some naval zones stay patrolled even when there was no ship in for a month or longer, for example the chinese coast line. Why?
To add to what has been already said, a navy you cannot see (because of the fog of war) is not listed in the tooltip which appears when you hover a sea province. It still provides its "patrol effect".

9. How can I predict best terrain modifiers for the attacker in a battle? Playing in terrain map mode and wait for the tooltip for each province to see if mountains, hill or plains are the dominant terrain?
Try to defend in marshes, hills and mountains (and forests) and try to attack in plains, farmlands and deserts. You can easily know what type of terrain there is in a province without the help of the tooltip. The terrain mapmode helps just with a simple glance. Though, tooltip is usefull for some complicated provinces.

10. How does cultural tradition translate to advisors? I read somewhere you need 91 tradition to get a guaranteed 5 star advisor with a chance on a 6 star. Is this true and are values for lower stars known? For example I need a 4 star for a decision, when it is save to recruit him?
I read somewhere (or I dreamt it, I can't recall :p) that there are thresholds every 5 point in CT. So I usually get my CT up to 95+ with magistrates and buy an advisor for the use or the sell.

91 to guarantee. Anything lower and you risk rolling 4 stars, which is really annoying. I have no experienced anything to make there's any way to get better odds of a 6 star than 91% though, so just hire advisors right when you hit that.

--

Also, it's worth noting that for provinces with multiple terrain types, the %s do not mean that the most dominant one is used, they're the % chance of the fight happening in that terrain. As a result, with some patience you can for example keep trying to attack an 80% mountain 20% plains province with small stacks until you hit plains, then bring in the rest of your army.

10 One thing to think of with CT is that when you get some CT (like at 1 jan) it doesnt take effect until next month. Its probably a programming effect but I've tryed it and found this out throu emperical trys.

11. I found this sentence in an AAR: "I wasn’t prevented from annexing them if I could hold on long enough for the warscore cost to drop to 100%." Does it mean if I occupy a country the warscore cost for certain demands will go down with time? How big can a country be to annex them in one war? Before DW only OPMs could be annexed.

12. Are provinces connected over straits neighboring for the code? For example if Ming sells Macau (an island with straits) to Portugal, will it fulfill the requirement to border a higher tech country for westernising?

Yes, the cost for demanding provinces slowly go down (~1% per year or two years). In DW you can full annex a country if the sum of the cost of its provinces is less than 100%. I usually look at the vassalization cost to know if I can full annex a country, as the vassalization cost is exactly the sum of the cost of the country's provinces.

12. Are provinces connected over straits neighboring for the code? For example if Ming sells Macau (an island with straits) to Portugal, will it fulfill the requirement to border a higher tech country for westernising?
yes, over strait = neighbour, in all matters.

After 5 years of occupying a province, its warscore cost starts dropping. At 10 years, if no action has happened other than occupation (no sieges being started/continued, no battles etc) white peace is automatically issued. In those intervening 5 years, warscore can drop quite a bit; since warscore cost is capped (at 300% I think?) for any one action, you can even do things like vassalize infinitely large countries with the right CB (the best example being vassalizing Burgundy as Austria with your mission in 5.1).

12. Are provinces connected over straits neighboring for the code? For example if Ming sells Macau (an island with straits) to Portugal, will it fulfill the requirement to border a higher tech country for westernising?
Yes.

13. Do income, stab cost and tech cost for an occupied apply to the owner or the controller?

14. How do I calculate the number of goods a provinces produces? Before DW it was just a function of population, but in DW I find provinces with more population producing less goods than another with less population.

15. Do junior partners in personal unions provide monthly tax income and land forcelimits to the overlord just as vassals?

16. What is the achievements button in the menu supposed to do? If I click it nothing happens.

17. What are the conditions to get a PU by diplomacy? There is a country with a weak heir (indicated by the Pretender rises I think) and listed in Disputed Succession. I claimed their throne but it even after a change of month it still reads that their heir will get the throne and not I. I have 79 Prestige, they 22.

You can pretty much treat an occupied province as belonging to the occupier. Not sure about stab/tech costs (I don't think they apply, but I could be wrong) but you get income, province modifiers, unique building bonuses, etc.

Units are mostly population, but base tax also contributes slightly. The formula is min(.99+pop/100000,2) + bt/20.

PUs don't give you anything, other than their allegiance and a shot at inheriting.

Achievements were turned off.

Disputed Succession is countries which are eligible to be targeted with Claim Throne, which is best used for the CB it gives. You'll only naturally PU or inherit a country if its king dies heirless and you've either claimed their throne or are just really lucky and have a royal marriage.

In other words, anything above 100k population doesn't add anything?

I found this formula for manpower:

province manpower = int((125*Units)*baseMP + buildings)*(%modifiers)

So number of trade goods acts as a multiplier for manpower as well?

Disputed Succession is countries which are eligible to be targeted with Claim Throne, which is best used for the CB it gives. You'll only naturally PU or inherit a country if its king dies heirless and you've either claimed their throne or are just really lucky and have a royal marriage.

Well, I am playing Ming and can't declare war so easily. What drives me crazy is that the tooltip states I will get the throne on the ruler's death but often I don't, so it is either random or I am missing something. Claiming Thrones is not cheap.

That you'll get the PU or inherit? The inheritance fluctuates very wildly, and is essentially random, so the tooltip doesn't really help there. For the PU itself, it's possible that you've claimed the throne, and then the king's gone and produced a strong heir, which invalidates your claims.

They're getting an heir at some point between you claiming the throne and their king dying.

Also, don't claim thrones if you don't plan to use the CB. It isn't worth it.

With high diplomatic skill inheriting is pretty consistent.

No, in this case I would get the message that I lost my claim. Everytime I checked the tooltip stated we would form a PU, then the king dies but sometimes the weak heir succeeds for whatever reason. I only claim thrones with weak heirs or with very old kings without heirs.
