i have played rome since i downloaded it.

i liked the game but there is something that bothers me. Those stupid barbarians always seem to favour me. have happened many when times im in war with another nation when barbarians attacks me with 15 or more units. which makes me loose 2-4provinces to the barbarians. and makes beeing in war almost impossible.

atm i dont know how to expand my empire...Colonizing goes to slow, and i cant expand through warfare because i always looses 2stability. This happens since i dont know how to get a CB against other nations.

And when i have declared war against some one else, those ugly barbarians always seem to show up and make my day harder. The same happned when i tried to annex some provinces up in france. Carthage declared war on me which made me loose Italy to them since my forces was spread to thin.

anyway. atm im playing on very easy with my own tweaks to it. will play on very easy until i learn the game. When i learn how the game works then i will go back to normal.

Barbarians will go for the province with the highest civilization rating near their home province.
Don't worry, if your empire grows slowly... you have several hundred years to make it big. Quick expansions are not always wise. You'll run out of manpower, get large amounts of badboy points, the newly conquered provinces have a large unrest, etc.

A word of advice on barbarians during wartime: before embarking upon a war you know may last a while go through and kill all of the barbarians along your borders. It usually only takes a year or less of sitting your armies on the empty provinces, and once you're done they'll all be at 1-2 strength with very little chance of them rising up to pillage your provinces in the near future. You still have the super-barbarian hordes from the deep, uncolonized north to watch out for, but that is normally a once in five+ years event for me so far.

Barbarians are definitely a pain, but if you are proactive in your efforts to defeat them they will almost always be kept to a managable level. It has worked for me at least.

Rome is screwed as far as barbarians are concerned. All hordes from all over the world head straight there. I can literally march an army across my northern Macedonian border raising a couple of 20 units strong hordes and they will go straight for Rome destroying their culture and manpower pool.

I guess if you're Rome (haven't played Rome yet), you need 40k troops at your northern border with good generals for all the time.

yeah. im going to try out diffrent strategies tomorrow.

the boring thing is that i can only colonize provines along my border, and i can only colonize a province that is close to one of mine that have atleast 50 in civilzation points. dont remember the name exactly.

Its simply how the game is designed. Rome has high civ. value. Both reconsider that if Rome´s civ. value drops all those barbarians will look for other to fight against. And there you are, with Macedonia and their high civ. value ;)

And you dont need 40K troops to fight with rebels. Just mix your armies (read strategy guide for hints) so that they will fight their best.

Probably because that otherwise everyone would go for more valuable provinces. And if you would have been able to colonise with lower civ. value all of europe would soon be in the hands of the player. Not historical or fun ;)

Oh, I don't know, I rather like having all those barbarians trying to get into Italy as Rome. Why? Because I consistently crush them, resulting in a steady stream of slaves to help fuel my economy.

Heck, I usually just have to keep one standard Secret Master Legion in north Italy to keep the barbarians at bay without having to worry.

Same here... And if it gets boring that legion marches a bit north of the border to start some barbarian uprising ;)

IF playing Rome, try to get horses fast. Though trade or wars. Then build "heavy infantry" mixed with cavalry and bowmen.
Its all in the strategy guide ;)

I use 5k HI, 5k archers, 2k cavalry per general. Join two together for bigger events. Those haven't let me down so far and aren't that costy since I have a lot of archers.

My standard legions, based on playing Rome.

Rome, early, no access to horses:

18,000 men: 10,000 heavy infantry, 8,000 archers.

Rome, later, no access to horses:

30,000 men: 16,000 heavy infantry, 14,000 archers

Rome, later, access to horses (whether auxiliary or national):

34,000 men: 16,000 heavy infantry, 14,000 archers, 2,000 cavalry, 2,000 horse archers

All of these Roman Legions assume the use of either Professional Soldiers, Legionary Military System, or Martial Ethos. They also assume taking the Roman style of warfare when the option becomes available.

Also, a general word of advice is: Bononia.

Aside from Gallia Cisalpina it will probably be your best province for defense, so make sure to build a decent fortress there (2000 man strong garrison for starters) and station an army either there or in Gallia Cisalpina. Or even in Liguria, since it's quite fast to get both ways from there.

10000 men and a decent general ought to be able to hold most barbarian hordes off (aside from the huuge ones), although of course not always winning on the first fight. Overall it is cheaper to lose a few times and have less men, than to pay the upkeep for a bigger army that's just idling or squashing mini rebel armies in preventive battles most of the time anyway.

This is just so sad.

The same game all over again.

Ever since HOI II have they been destroying their games.

Im so dissapointed, as they started out amazing, and they just got so involved in growing big, they forgot what justified their existence... Making intelligent games for the gamer.

I've been a sure thing for them, but not anymore its over.

Im sure they are busy, just not with the right things.
