My liege is in my jail

We are Norse, around the year 800.

I used the "spy" option to imprison my liege after he revoked two of my titles.
But what now ? I can't declare war on him, I joined an "independence" faction but they do not move although it would be an instant win IIRC.
I could maybe ransom him, but he is in debt. (And nobody else want to pay for his life apparently )

It seems I am now regent of the kingdom, but what is the benefit?

Since he is in jail, he transferred to me vassalage to several lords here and there, never two in the same duchies. Is he doing this under pressure because he is in my jail or is it another way to fool me that I don't understand ?

He already transferred a vassal to me before revoking my home title, I really can't read in the mind of that silly king.

Faction.

Any faction you can faction you can make come true.

More specifically any war you start via a faction(and you can) through the intrigue decisions you will instantly win because you have him imprisoned.

But I have to be the leader of the faction, right ?
And all the faction I can create are to put someone else on the throne, but not me.
Maybe I can divide the kingdom this way ? The guy is king of Denmark and Sweden.

For maximum control yes.

Though theoretically even with you not being the leader of the faction/rebellion holding him might still get some war score even if you can't end it.

Its best if you have a claim through marriage or something then capture him. You can also faction to overthrow him possible, faction for a different succession.

Faction for independence.

I was not able to do anything in the independence faction where I was not the leader. So I just made him release Sweden. (Or Svipjod as it is called in this era)

Overall I am not sure I did a good move, I had so many positive bonus relation with the king that even with the -160 penalty for making him loose a title his opinion of me is -1.

I wonder if I was made regent because because he was in my jail or because after all he like me anyway.
And all the vassals he gave me when in my prison, was he forced to do so or am I just his favourite vassal whatever ?

I tend to wait until we're under elective, unless I'm plotting to get elective, or until I have a claim before capturing him.

In your situation I might have sat on him in the dungeon for a bit until a faction I wanted opened up. Though that does often lead to the prize just dying.

It might have I don't know. Pre-conclave I would have said it was just the luck of him giving you the designated regent title before hand. But post conclave I too have captured a liege only to become regent.

Part of me thinks him giving you the vassals is standard AI behavior of the AI seeing one its vassals unhappy and gives out things to try and get that opinion up. But the coincidence of you holding him and him giving you multiple vassals really can't be ignored theres gotta be some little code behind it.

Couldn't you declare war to him (not through factions) to get back all your titles? If so, I would just have let him rot in jail just to declare war and get back my demesne once I have secured a strong enough powerbase to rival him. Either this or let him rot in jail forever (being regent gives you one extra voice, so two if you're a councilor already but besides that it doesn't do much as it's still your AI that accept or refuses actions for your liege). At least, as long as he's in jail he can't arm you and when another guy takes over, odds are that he won't revoke your lands.

If so, I would just have let him rot in jail just to declare war and get back my demesne once I have secured a strong enough powerbase to rival him. Yeah, you'd win without a fight, even, since he starts out imprisoned by an alliance member. This is something I discovered completely by accident when I declared war on the Queen of Bavaria to get Gwent back. Long story but the short version is, she started out imprisoned by one of my allies due to some intrigue weirdness unrelated to me, and that apparently counted as "captured enemy ruler in battle" for warscore purposes.

No, there was no possible DoW. Exept by faction and intrigue screen.

And I do not have conclave, so no position in council.

I could have cut his head to have the realm parted by the gavelkind, but by removing Sweden first I hope the rest of his domain should be parted in smaller pieces on his death than it would have been with two king titles.

You can't declare war on characters who are in your dungeon, nor can you perform any other diplomatic action that could lead to war with the prisoner (e.g. executing a plot to revoke, delivering a faction ultimatum, etc.).
