Game seems unplayable on my new computer just because it doesn't have a pause key.

Thanks! I didn't even know about clicking the hourglass, and I've played the game for so long!
Also, depending on your keyboard by clicking the</> key in the bottom right of the keyboard just left of the shift you can pause the game.
If you feel so inclined, you can designate any arbitrary key to the pause address; a program which can do this for you is SharpKeys 2. It's free.
