One idea I would quite like to pursue is to build my own city on a large, isolated tropical island, with other smaller neighbouring islands that I could connect using bridges and ferries. However, from my understanding, In Cities: Skylines, the city must be connected to the outside world.

In theory, I should be able to connect my city to the outside world using a sea port or an airport. However, i'm not sure if this would be possible in practice, because the game requires that a map start with a connecting highway, and obviously this would not be possible on an island map? Can anyone confirm this?

In SimCity 3000 I would often build cities on an island. Here I'm not sure it will be possible.
Like you said, cities have to be connected (by highway), but maybe it will be possible to make an island and connect it with a highway to a tiny bit of land on the mapborder. Technically it will still be an island, even though it will be connected to the mainland.

Really, we will have to wait and see. Another option would be to destroy that highway-bridge once the city gets going, but I suppose that in either cases (only one highway, or no highway at all), the game will go bananas.

i think the devs will need to fix this up a bit. There needs to be a possibility of a pure island city, and Id really like it if you could modify all the roads on the entire map, righ up to the border. That way you can reorganize the highway system when your city grows without needing to buy up the land. Also you can start the map with simple single lane roads everywhere that can be upgraded to a highway down the road (from map edge to the city).

I like the idea of being able to create and isolated island city too. It wont be the first city I build, but it would be nice to have it as an option in future. Hopefully its something that can be changed via an official update after release.

Another problem for island cities is the size limit of our cities. Water will take up so much space that the buildable land gets really small.

Yep...Some people from us want this. It's hard, very true, no space for this or this. But, this is challenge to make nice city on small island with no more space for stadium. Damn! What to destroy? I want a stadium in city! Q.Q Well. I want this!

They would need to open up the port for inter-city travel as well for this as currently (to my knowledge) all it does is freight and tourists.

Would be great to see passenger and car ferries (maybe even train ferries). I like the idea since I wanted to make several island cities of which only some would be linked via bridges.

I love doing Island type Cities. They are the most challenging and more exciting to do.

Agreed. Although Island cities is only one of my ideas I have for my maps. Hopefully the devs can update the game later to support the building of isolated cities like island cities. I guess in the meantime I will just have to build a bridge from a small piece of border land (presumably the mainland), as suggested by dj97.

I noticed another guy in one of the other threads mentioned building the GTA5 map, being an island map he is going to run into the same issue.

Coastal development is far more interesting than pure land development.
However I don't really see anything interesting about that part in this game, yet...
The idea of mandatory "outside road connection"... If you can use road as the medium, why not boat? Why not plane?

Island, people start coming in with boat, develop small town, harvest natural resources around, potential oil & fish as primary export.
Fresh water supply? Initially import from "foreign place" with exterior connecting pipeline, and advance to sea water distillation (just like Singapore).
Advance, build small airport, even reclaim land for long run way, turn town into tourism town... etc etc...

Yea, need that possibility. I definitely will not go for pure land development, I loves water; but can the game satisfy us?
