One idea I would quite like to pursue is to build my own city on a large, isolated tropical island, with other smaller neighbouring islands that I could connect using bridges and ferries. However, from my understanding, In Cities: Skylines, the city must be connected to the outside world.
In theory, I should be able to connect my city to the outside world using a sea port or an airport. However, i'm not sure if this would be possible in practice, because the game requires that a map start with a connecting highway, and obviously this would not be possible on an island map? Can anyone confirm this?
