Okee...so I receive an event where with a piece of land my bastard 'demands' to be recognized as a legitimate heir based on their strength of rule.

Didn't give me any choices here, unless I went through the event too fast. So I figure...okay. Good. Let him inherit, he's cooler anyway.

So I checked. He's lost the bastard trait, but doesn't show up on my succession screen. He HAS gained claims on all my counties, though I don't know if that happened then or earlier.

Is this how the event works? Did I miss an option B?

Essentially, yes. All the event does is legitimize the bastard, but depending on his birth order or his strength (which of these depends on your succession laws), he may still not be high enough in the succession to appear on the list, much less be the next to succeed for sure.

Well....I was playing Apulia 1066. The bastard in question is Bohemond. The law at that point was um...salic consanguinity. (Strongest child, oldest brother, etc. No passing through females.)

In fact I just loaded an old save so I could see exactly what the situation was. Here's how it stood at that point in time:

Robert de Hauteville - King of Naples, Duke of Apulia, four counties

Succession:
Roger Borsa
Bohemond's oldest kid, at this time not an adult
Borsa's oldest kid, ditto
Roger de Hauteville (Robert's brother)
Guilllame (Robert's other brother)
Etc.

Now let's look at the male kids:
Bohemond de Hauteville - Duke of Calabria and Sicily. Four counties.
NOT a bastard (the event fired.)
Among other things, a claim on all four of Robert's counties.

Roger Borsa (the Wimp) - Duke of Campania. One county.

One other (non-historical. Bastard. No territories. Child. Not in the running)


Now...by the terms of salic consanguity, Bohemond should be heir as he i's MUCH stronger. If he's legit now, why wasn't he in the succession chain at all? The claim on four counties strongly suggests the computer assumed I told him to get stuffed, but it didn't ask my opinion nor did Bohemond have an unusual reason when Roger Borsa did finally take over for daddy. The only thing I can think of is Bohemond's excommunicated. Would that knock him out of the succession chain?

If someone is excommunicated, that someone will _never_ inherit.

Yep, that's your problem...unless he loses the 'Excommunicated' trait, he can't inherit. However, his son still can...if you were under Primogeniture law. Since you're Consanguinuity, though, it went to his brother. Which sucks, because Roger Borsa is one craptastical ruler.

Hm. Well, that would explain why Bohemond suddenly popped into the succession list about ten years after Roger Borsa inherited.

So it's the pope's fault. They're really annoying me this game. 2 excommunications against Robert de Hauteville, mess up the succession, and 2 DOWs against Roger Borsa which I beat off. I think I'm gonna burn Rome to the ground when I get back to it...

He most likely got excommunicated by the duchess of Toscane. At the start of the 1066 scenario she is the papal controller, she excommunicates almost all her neighbours, Richard of Capua f.e. gets excommunicated in 90% of my games.

So when you grant Bohemond land his prestige is very low making it easy for the duchess to excommunicate him. Did you grant him a county that directly borders the lands of the duchess of Toscane ?

You can also use this 'feature' by giving a county to Roger Borsa and make sure that, that county borders the duchy of Toscane, he will then most likely be excommunicated.

And then give Bohemond some land in Sicily or at least not near the duchess of Toscane

And the king of germany if possible,
@Catknight try to fight muslims and build bishoprics to get more piety than duchess of Toscane. Then take the excommunication from your son and he will be your highest heir.

Heh...yes, I remember the piety race vs. the Duchess of Toscana when playing Apulia. Its scary those times that she actually manages to take the HRE for herself.

Although there's nothing like the sinking feeling that comes when your piety is through the floor due to getting your realm into appropriate order and not throwing money to the clergy at a time when you can't afford it...and then an Archbishop gets elected as Pope and the Papal Controller becomes one of your neighbours.

Well, it's 1115 so a bit late for poor Bohemond. (Though he's still alive) Thanks for telling me though. I've been leaving the dear duchess alone to avoid annoying Germany, but now that they're starting to break up it might be time to discuss matters with her heir.

That happened in one of my games. Germany collapsed and she marched in and took over. I hadn't even noticed because I was busy defending Christendom.
