Hello forums!

My name is Ori, I'm a slow-minded, clumsy and insensitive oaf and generally speaking a wacky, big goofball. In comparison to most of you I probably am the FNG since I haven't played the good, classics Paradox made and instead praise the likes of HOI4 and Stellaris that most veterans consider broken.

At least, that's my assumption based on a few reviews I've read of the hardcore old guard. I could be wrong, perhaps the new Paradox games are considered the crowning achievements of the company?

Anyhow, I am looking for a mentor for Stellaris. Someone to (erroneously?) call sensei-sama senpai. I want to learn two things in this game. How to mod Stellaris, bringing my favourite sci-fi and imaginary cultures to digital life and how to become a vastly better player than I currently am and not get my delicate hiney handed to me by every other AI, on easy and whilst cheating (slight exaggeration).

What better way to achieve both my goals of modding and gitting gud than asking about it on the very forum belonging to the company that created these extremely addicting games?

So if you feel up for the challenge of training me; PM me and I'll write down my Steam username.

Thanks for reading, I hope you all have a wonderfully fantastic awesome day!

Sincerely,

Ori.

Check out EnterElysium of Youtube. He is a streamer who has a fantastic grasp on the game. Aspec is another Youtuber who goes into detail about many of the mechanics of Stellaris and has Let's Plays on his channel as well.

Sorry, can't help with the modding.

Your unlikely to find a tutor (most people just don't have the spare time for teaching) but good luck if you do. I would say to you that modding Paradox games are not as daunting as it may appear and once you get started you'll enjoy figuring things out yourself. Of course feel free to ask for advice when you need it. Anyway I'll give you a few tips to get started.

First check out the user mods subforum and the stickied thread Modding Guides List. It has a pretty good list of guides to look through from just starting out to creating your own species. Heres the wiki page on modding if you haven't checked it out already http://www.stellariswiki.com/Modding It has some pretty good guides too.

Once you understand the basics of creating a mod I would advise you to read the games existing scripts, understand what they do and how, to get a broader view of how the insides of the game works and what you can do with modding. Even look at other peoples mods that are similar to what you want to create and learn what they did and try to incorporate that into your mod.

Also a last bit of advice for your first mod: start small. Nothing worse than starting up some massive project, realising how difficult it will be, and then giving up on modding forever. So, good luck!

Awww I was hoping for a master.

Not only to teach me but also to play with. I have three other friends who own Stellaris but they don't really have the same amount of time I have to burn on this glorious, glorious game.

Hello and welcome,

On the modding front, I think the main issue is that modding is such a broad topic. Finding someone who literally knows all the systems you might possibly want to mod is going to be hard, and they might not be able to put in the time commitment required to teach you personally. There are some really excellent guides out there though which are great places to start, and my suggestion is just to create a personal mod file and start playing around and tweaking things. Also, if you see a mod which does something interesting download it and look through the files to see how it was done. I would say I've learned more from just reverse-engineering other people's mods than practically anything else.

If what you're aiming for is to be able to add new species to the game, however, that's a relatively straightforward goal! In fact, there's a guide on the wiki itself for how to do just that:

I'll say this, looking at the core files I can kinda grasp the lay out, and the comments are handy. However, my understanding of lua is limited. While I'm more than happy to try and slog through files to figure everything out, and the comments on options are quite useful, I would still love to have some kind of reference document. Thanks for the mod guides link though, I'm willing to bet that will show me everything I might need for now.
