Ok so I'm nearly at the end of my current play through I've taken out two AEs, the Scourge, and everything else except the extra-dimensional dudes. To beat the AEs I had to build a fleet unlike ever before (for me) and it hit the 250k power level about 350 corvettes, 200 dessies, 200 cruisers, and 80 battleships.

I've always had this problem where my fleet gets so big that, whilst the game runs not too badly considering most of the time, when I select the fleet to direct it etc the game chuggs

It's got so bad now that when I select this fleet the game practically pauses.

Also it's so big it no longer appears in the the fleet window. It's blank. Or doesn't appear at all. I can't split it etc as no fleet options appear.

Has anyone else had this ? Is it fixable ? I'd like to know why the game can cope with the fleet graphics of this fleet when I select it and it can't cope too. :)

:D

The devs used to have a max limit on naval capacity set to 1000 for this very reason. But they have made the end game much stronger, which prompted them to remove the max limit. I wish the devs would dial it back even further and say 200-300 was max for all empires, so ships feel more important. Even battleships are a dime a dozen in the current meta. It is easy queue up 20-40 of them in a year.

When i get to the end game, i supplant my corvettes and destroyetd with Battleships and Cruisers. Less lag and less clicking to rebuild ships. Honestly, I might even build only Battleships and be done with it.

Yesterday I had a battle with an awakened empire that totaled about 1.2 million worth of fleets, mine alone was 420k with 2000 naval capacity.

I was genuinely afraid that my cpu would explode.

Reading all this I think that I was investisting a bit too much in repetitive research... My fleet is 315k while being 500 naval capacity. It still lags though.

Its been a while since I had my game slow down due to my fleets, but if I remember correctly my largest was three fleets (yes I break them up to allow for quicker reaction times across my Empires) consisting of 10 Battleships, 20 Cruisers, 30 Destroyers, and 50 Corvettes, each. So in total I guess its 30, 60, 90, 150, respectively, and when they all jumped into the same system along with all of the interdenominational crisis...things, the game speed would slow to about 1.5 (as in between game speed one and two) and this is from a guy who always runs at full speed (my spacebar gets lots of use).

Now I'm curious about y'alls rigs, I have an Octa-core running at 4.0 GHz. My major annoyance with every game (paradox games that is) is that late game it lags so much that I do not want to keep playing, funnily enough this is why I have only beat CKII once, over 850 hours (not counting before steam integration) and I have never beat Stellaris, at 284 hours.

In my longest, grandest playthrough, in which I conquered the entirety of a Huge 4-armed galaxy (the one and only time I've buckled down to do so), I had a combined fleet far larger (about 907K at the point I ended). However, I not only had my fleets separated into multiple strike forces scattered about the galaxy, each about 100K tops, and each under the command of a different admiral, I found I could seldom have too many of them in the same system. The more ships in the same place that the game has to manage, the harder it is on your computer. The one and only time I ever had them all in the same system, my computer practically seized up like yours did, freezing and lurching in great fits until I scattered them again.

Though I don't know how to help you with your current situation of not being able to split your fleet (beyond reloading to an earlier save point), I can at least offer the advice of keeping any single fleet from getting that large in the future. The game seems more than capable of handling a vast amount of ships, but only when they aren't all together. Having multiple fleets is always a good thing anyways. If you go the Galactic Conqueror route like I did in that playthrough, you're going to need to have ships in multiple places at once anyways.

I have an I5-4690K running at 4.2GHz with a GTX 970 and 16GB of ram.

It doesn't help when large fleets are around or late game.

With Stellaris and every other Paradox game on the Clausewitz Engine presumably liking higher core clocks, Sometimes I wonder if a really high GHz dual core would be better. :(

I have this exact issue. I even find that just selecting a large enough fleet late game causes the game's fps to drop and it doesnt seem to matter if I'm looking at the system it's in, though it's obviously even worse if I do look at the system its inside.

The only solution I've ever really had for this is when I play with a slower than light mod, which makes expansion somewhat slower as well as warfare.

When it takes 1-5 years to travel between systems and potentially takes your doomstack 10-20 to travel all the way across a large enemy empire, keeping them in one place becomes counter-productive.

Other than that, I think the best solution is to simply make the cost of newer more advanced ships significantly more than simpler ones or make it harder to have the resources to maintain such a massive fleet, rather than an arbitrary ship cap.

I tend to also fall into a trap of using way too many corvettes in the end game, rather than switching to cruisers and battleships. I guess this is an issue of having a set size for each ship-type, no more no less. A game like Star Ruler, for example you could scale your ships as large or small as you wanted and I tended to increase their size and individual power as the game progress which limited my ability to spam too many ships, but even then, it's not necessarily a great solution to the problem.

In realistic terms even the fleets we see in the endgame of Stellaris would be pitifully easy to produce and maintain with less than a solar system of resources, and it's feasibly to see massive empires having millions of ships.

Though if we had the game was truly realistic it would be unfeasible.

Yeah, you get to a point where the in-combat window breaks and doesn't even show the individual ships.

Yea, there is zero reason for fleets to be that large.

You need big and strong fleets to fight awakened FEs though.

We really need dreadnought and titan ships to boost up fleet strength without having to resort to massive doomstacks.

To be honest I think Stellaris fleets get waaay too huge by the late game. It even stops being epic and just becomes frustrating to deal with.

That breaks game engine as well as balance and makes even biggest and coolest individual ships worthless. There should be some organic way to significantly reduce late game huge empire fleet size, the game simply doesn't handle such extremes well.

Also, I still think awakened fallen empires are absolutely ridiculously overpowered and should be nerfed A LOT (at least to be weaker than crisis invaders - goddamn, they were supposed to be final bosses...), and that regular AI empires should pose bigger threat...

Agree on a Major Scale back on the FE and Swarms etc.. and make the cost of ALL ships "significantly" greater while Buffing their strengths 50% (suitably) across the full spectrum. That way, the power level "feel" remains but the sheer and ungainly numbers are reduced.

As noted I too have a modern gaming PC built specifically for high end gaming and Stellaris in the late game become a wait and see affair that totally kills any sense of excitement, that is surely meant to be at that time in the game.

Regardless, for myself, the early grind thru the Pirates and other general BS makes starting new games a real chore. I have yet to actually win or finish save once when the Federation I belonged to WON and I did not even see if coming. Talk about a buzz killer. :(

Thanks guys it's not just me with issues then.

But does anyone else get the problem with the massive FPS drop ONLY when they actually select the fleet like me? The FPS is pap with a big fleet and big fight ... like 10fps to 15fps.... but only when I click on the fleet does it drop to unbelievably low levels.

Also in my current game the fleet window doesn't even appear when I click it now so I can't split me fleet or anything.

>look

You can see my FPS is low - 15 - in a quiet system when fleet are not selected. I select them and it drops to 2fps and I can't see the fleet window.

I've added savegame in if anyone wants to try it :)

For PC wise I aren't running the best - i5 2500k clocked at 3.6 ghz 12gig ram and a GTX 760 - but it's clearly not a graphics issue since it's only when I click on the fleet.

*edit*

Futher to this the fleet doesn't even need to be visible. Check this out. Gal view, 30+ fps no problem, select the fleet, 2 fps.....

I think it's caused by a code loop bug that's talked about on the HOI4 dev diary.

  • There is one last that is my favorite. In our Clausewitz engine, there was an old code loop that nobody ever dared to touch. It was processing all the user interface elements in a "flat manner" instead of the "tree hierarchy". This means, that the more windows and buttons we add to the game, this loop was heavier and heavier. And the windows didn't even had to be shown for it to slow down the game. We always knew about this infamous spot, however reworking it without breaking all the interfaces was nearly impossible. Until now. I found the way! Previously that code loop had ~120 000 passes in each frame, now it's under 700, processing only the necessary interface elements. By that I mean, when you are looking at the technology trees, we are not processing through the hidden production windows and buttons, etc.

If this is indeed the problem, I hope that fix is ported to Stellaris.

Yesterday I had a battle with an awakened empire that totaled about 1.2 million worth of fleets, mine alone was 420k with 2000 naval capacity.

I was genuinely afraid that my cpu would explode.
Can't you just cut the lag spikes but not being in system view when 500k worth of ship power duke it out? I mean you can't see any battle graphics in galaxy view.
