K this is my first game and ive chosen prussia. I spent the first years getting used to the economy. Ive managed to balance the books by building factorys where there was labour and therefore increasing exports/tax income. I havnt managed to invest in full education like people suggested but i think ive done ok with infra.

My first war was fun. Managed to get much of hanover but it wasnt easy. Ai is much smarter than EU. Next war i united more of germany to the south but then i saw bavaria with 75 division heading towards me! No idea how they got this many but i had the WS to peace out which was lucky cos they would destroy me. Next france attacked but i defended well. Unlike in EU where they send 5-10k armies randomly, i was suprised to see them build armies on my border and send them accross together. Amazing.

Anyway here are some screenies, maybe you can give me some tips from what you see.

Whenever you go to war against a German minor, satellite them in the peace treaty. Whever you satellite a country on which you have claims, you will recieve all the claimed land in the treaty. In other words, you would have reduced Hannover to juist its capital.

Should i do this if they are 1 prov minor or should i just annex. I had occupied all of hanover at the time but didnt have 100WS for some reason.

If they're 3 provs or less, annex. Above 3, you'll need a second war to be able to annex anyway.

Crank up your tax to 49% and max your social spending, it doesn't cost anything as you have no reforms, but the slider posistion still affects pop's con. With the extra tax income you should be able to max out education spending.

Do you have 1.03b? If not, get it.

There are also mods to fix bugs in the patchs and mods thread, look in my sig for a link. I'd recomend my megamod which combines all my bug fixes with my german unification mod, which gets rid of the huge bavarian army for one thing.

About the bug of the huge bavarian armies, does this still remain when the south german federaton is formed (so that even SG fed could afford the same armies)?

Yeah, it does, or at least sometimes. It's great when you're, as Prussia, at war with Austria and a bugged up SGF, and then get backstabbed by France :D

First game as Prussia...ambitious. Good job so far...as to raising the taxes: beware that anything above 33% will start to effect CON/MIL. So, might be better to tax the middle and rich more (there are fewer of them and are easier to control if they get out of hand)...a la progressive taxation. Also, be sure that when you raise taxes, you don't suddenly remove a POPs ability to get its goods.

Well the honeymoon is now over. Revolt risk has shot up all over prussia. I think the high militancy of craftsmen is to blame. I think ive made some big mistakes somewhere by not paying attention to militancy. Last time i looked it was falling, now some years later it is rising fast. Social spending constributed to this i suppose and i havnt done any political reforms yet. Hope it can be rescued...

Did you just raise taxes? You may be cutting into POP needs. Check this out (VickyWiki on POP needs). Also, just raising taxes can effect MIL.

To see what's causing the MIL hold the mouse over the MIL rating on a specific POP. Write down the list and try to change them! ;)

Also, beware that you have a conservative party in power and the craftsmen/clerks are probably liberal. How high is consciousness of the conservative pops? If you've got enough clergy to get neg CON for the farmers and laborers (tend to be CON), you might consider seting a liberal party as rulers. But I'd recommend saving before hand...could get ugly.

Beware of the nationalism. In Victoria its something strange. A conquered province will start with a low revoltrisk due to nationalism that will slowly rise in the next ten years at which point its instantly gone. The revoltrisk at the end of the 10 year period can be quite substantially.

I have left all taxes on 33percent since start. The cause is as you say the liberal thinking with craftsmen etc. Ive had to lower taxes big time and introduce non-socialist unions but its too late i think. They lack furniture and clothes even though i produce both. Also i set it to buy but still they cant get enough. Big mess ive made, i might restart. Id have to keep these taxes low for many years to get militancy back down. At best its -0.02 for some craftsmen but i cant afford to lower middle class taxes for the clerks.

Setting the goods to be bought won't help your POPs. In fact, it'll hutrt them. POPs buy directly from the world market, so since you're buying goods off the market, you're taking them out of the hands of your POPs.

Like I said way back at the beginning, read the revised manual; read VickyWiki. It'll help a lot.

Yeah that was a mistake. I have been reading the revised manual and playing at the same time. Im going to try some of your other links now. This screenie shows the neglect ive given to my pops. Maybe social reforms earlier, and meeting their needs better, would have prevented this. Also, seems germany is too difficult to start with so im going to restart as belgium

Yeah but for your first game your doing great, especially with Prussia who i wouldnt recommend for a beginner. You should have alot easier of a time playing Belgium, or try to unify Scandinavia playing as sweden. Its fun while not being overwhelmed. Some nice events in Vicky for Sweden.

Ok i restarted with belgium didnt like them as much. Im notw playing prussia again and keeping an eye on militancy. Its not 1845 and militancy has started to rise for the first time.

As before it is the craftsmen who are the problem. Their militancy is rising by 0.05 in many places and im unsure how to deal with it. Do i lower the tax for the poor? This will loose me a lot of money but im unsure what else to do. Political reforms dont seem to have any effect at this stage when i check their effects. They still cant afford furniture and clothes so maybe i could help them afford this?? Please help cos i dont want it to get out of hand like last time.

On the bright side, economy is going better this time and im stockpiling small arms and canned food.

edit - ok this is strange. I reloaded save and some of the craftsmen who did have rising militancy are actually losing it now. Polish onces and the ones in the screenshot are rising though but it doesnt add up. The total 0.05 is higher than the sum??????????????

Well i thought that but at this stage in the game, when i hover my mouse to see the political effects of reforms none of them seem to make any difference. In my last game they did but in this one they seem to make no difference.

eg all trade union reforms give + - 0 when i hover mouse?

also plurality 5.8 percent ,
