I am getting started (first game) with Austria in the Age of Exploration.

I've read various newbie stuff and the tutorials.

So far, I am in the #2 spot. I've achieved practically all my VPs up to this point through sending diplomats everyplace and doing royal marriages. I am curious if the diplomatic VPs are awarded at the moment the diplomatic transaction takes place or is it something annual due to improved relations?

I don't have the potential to acheive discoveries like Spain. Also, I am trying to play peaceful.

I have been working on improving my economy through merchants/COT. But what do I need to do in order to score economic VPs?

Any other thoughts will also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Making a lot of money and placing colonies.

As Austria if you want the mega diplomacy VPs, start diplo vassalizing / annexing. Its real easy, because most of your monarchs have very high diplomatic ratings. You can annex all of Germany if you set your mind to it, although in AoE it might be hard to do before the Reformation....

Be patient, it is a long game and you will have more opportunity for VP's later. Concentrate on getting your economy going so you can exploit these opportunities when they arise.

You get 50 points for being elected Holy Roman Emperor right? It took me in my Brandenburg game 260 years to pass Austria because of that, they must of gained 500 points from being constantly elected.

Tim has the right idea. Austria typically has a large lead in diplomatic vps because of their likelihood to be the favorite in elections for HRE (Holy Roman Emperor). Not that you don't want to look into the diplo-annexing of your neighbors, because that is a good idea too, but whilst you do that, maintain the best relation you can with all the HRE electors in the HRE. Click on the religion symbol on your country info window to get the religions map in the main window. You will see the HRE in the center of europe outlined in red. Those countries lying within the line typically are electors and are your primary targets for sucking-up. Next time there is an election, as long as you are viewed favorably by these folks in the majority, you will be elected Holy Roman Emperor, and blow right by the rest in VPs.

also consider attacking italy and the slavic countries when you get causus bellis - if you want peaceful then just vassalize them, you wont get ANY badboy. this will, however, boost your VPs through the roof. peaceful is good, but pacifist wont win you many grand campaigns. exploit CBs when you get them.

1 thing is defiantely all that is diplomacy. Dont conquest too much... just venice and some of north italy.

You get alot of inheritance (milan, Bohemia, Hungary).

Diploannex like crazy.

Vassalize the balkan states...Keep Ottomans at bay..dont let em get into hungary PROTECT YOUR INTRESTS. Just winning battles and gettin cash in peace will make your VP go through the roof.

Avoid to many military annexations. You get inheritance events and just about all of your monarchs have high diplo ratings. Use this to your advantage by diploannexing anyhing that allies itself with you ;). When you are forced into military action you should try to vassalize to set your former enemies up for diploannexation. When you force vassalize them they will leave their alliance, you can then send a state gift their way and bring them into yours. This will make diploannexation possible.
