EVENTHIST15001;When Constantine XI Dragases came to the throne in what little remained of the East Roman Empire he was determined to see the survival of his nation, and if at all possible see its at least partial restoration. However it soon became apparent to him that the Byzantine Military was in a sorry shape and with it even mere survival seemed unlikely and the Imperial treasury was empty meaning that he could not finance the reforms that were badly needed. While agonising over what to do he was approached by representatives of the Republic of Genoa who offerred to finance the reforms for him if Byzantium would ceed Imperial claim to Kaffa and Kerch (Genoan Black Sea possessions) and would indeed protect Genoan claims to those provinces. Constantine eagerly agreed. Byzantium saw its reforms and ceeded its claims to Kaffa and Kerch.;;;;;;;;;;10544
EVENTHIST15002;The Despot of Morea, the younger brother of Constantine, offerred his services as a Military commander to Byzantium. Being the younger of the two sons of Emperor Ioannes he naturally spent much of his life learning how to fight and command a battle, and to assist his brother in any fashion required of him rather than learn the ways of leadership and the ways of court. He spent his childhood learning these things while Constantine served as Despot of Morea; and continued training after Constantine became Emperor. In 1454 he felt ready to lead armies on the open field of battle; and soon his abilty was called into use when a minor rebellion occurred in the Morean province which Demetrios quickly and soundly defeated. Emperor Constantine was impressed and agreed to allow his brother a command.;;;;;;;;;;10545
EVENTHIST15003;With the Byzantine Empire fending off attempts by the Ottoman Turks to defeat them on the open field of battle under the leadership of the great Constantine, the Turks realised with Constantine on the throne of the Empire, and his brillian brother leading the Armies, they could not win. One of them had to go - and that one was the Emperor. Under the cover of darkness Turkish assassins entered into Constantinople and stole their way into the Palace, and murdered the Emperor while he slept. They were of course caught as they tried to make their escape, they died during interrogation before revealing who sent them. However Murad the Sultan of the Ottoman Turks could not keep quiet in his court and Byzantine spies overheard him boast his involvement in the death of the Emperor.;;;;;;;;;;10546
EVENTHIST15004;With the death of the great Emperor Constantine the Commeni in Trebizond took the opportunity to press their claims to the throne of the East Roman Empire. And historically they managed to unseat the Paelaelogi Dynasty with the support of the nobles of Byzantium, and the Commeni Dynasty of Byzantium began.;;;;;;;;;;10547
EVENTHIST15005;With the Byzantine Empire enduring the assault by the Ottoman Turks, and the reformation of the Military it has become apparent the Empire needs a central Institution through which all its recruits to the Military are trained. There is consensus on this requirement - what is disagreed on is who will become Commandant of the War College. The choices are recently retired General Giustiniani of Thrace who favoured a smaller, more efficient, more expensive Military; and Duke Manuel of Athens who favoured a larger but less expensive cost effective Military.;;;;;;;;;;10548
EVENTHIST15006;After years of Commenus rule in both Byzantium and Trebizond the new Empress has found it increasingly difficult to rule both Empires seperately and has decided that either both Greek Empires must finally be reunited or that a Regency must rule in her stead in Trebizond. Historically Empress Zoe united the Empires and ruled quite effectively from Constantinople over the entire Empire.;;;;;;;;;;10549
EVENTHIST15007;Emperor Dauid III was always spoiled and pampered, even as a child; and as a ruler he was lazy and ineffectual and as a result some of the nobles began to plot against him. He discovered their plotting and flew into a rage. He ordered their immediate arrest and execution; however some escaped and lead their own revolt against the Emperor. Dauid, for all his laziness, was able to utterly destroy the revolt and as a result of this rebellion against his authority he became rather paranoid and began levying heavy taxes upon the nobles as well as beginning to preemptively punish any sign of dissent by anyone.;;;;;;;;;;10550
EVENTHIST15008;In the years since the revolt of the greedy, opportunistic nobility, Emperor Dauid became increasingly paranoid and therefore dictatorial. His grip on the country became every tighter and taxes which were originally placed as punishment on the nobles extended as preemptive punishment to the peasant classes as well. Eventually the peasants could tolerate no more and they revolted; which Emperor Dauid swiftly crushed. In the end the rebellion only served to further his paranoia and greed.;;;;;;;;;;10551
EVENTHIST15009;After years of oppresive taxes, random arrests for treason, and a national curfew there was a general across the board discontent with the Emperor. Many times the people and nobility had tried to reason with the highly paranoid and now widely hated Dauid III but he refused to listen and became ever more oppressive. And in 1559 the populace - common and noble alike - revolted.;;;;;;;;;;10552
EVENTHIST15010;After Demetrios was unseated from rulership of the Empire, he and his family fled westward seeking haven. They visited the Italian states, then to the Iberian states, then north to France, over to England, back over into the Holy Roman Empire, and finally back east into the Kingdom of Poland where their request for asylum was finally granted. They were given haven, some lands, and the honorary title of Dukes of their lands. Over the past years Duke Micheal has been keeping a close eye on happenings in Byzantium, watching rebellion after rebellion be put down until finally he could no longer just watch Dauid lead his nation into destruction. He took the opportunity to move to retake the throne for his family; so he petitioned the Polish King for aid, who saw fit to grant it, and then marched south to Constantinople with a Polish army at his back. The army was ordered to stop Micheal and the Polish army marching southwards, but they ignored orders and Micheal and the Poles did not see hide nor hair of a Byzantine soldier until they reached the gates of Constantinople. The garrison inside Constantinople threw open the gates of the great city at his arrival and the Captain of the Guard escorted the Duke into the Imperial Palace with a contingent of Polish and Byzantine soldiers. Micheal arrested Dauid, and then placed him on trial and executed him for treason against the Soveriegn realm of Eastern Rome. Micheal then crowned himself Emperor of Byzantium and sent the Polish army home with a message of thanks to the King - Micheal also returned his Polish lands to the crown of Poland.;;;;;;;;;;10553
EVENTHIST15011;After years of struggling and resistance the East Romans were finally able to achieve what seemed impossible. The defeat of the Ottoman Turks and the restoration of the Empire to its former glory. The Empire was once again on its way to greatness.;;;;;;;;;;10554
EVENTHIST15012;With the revival of the Empire, the Byzantines were in a position to reclaim many of their old territories. Historically they used their new found wealth and power to do just that.;;;;;;;;;;10555
EVENTHIST15100;With the death of the great Paelaelogus Emperor Constantine the Commeni in Trebizond took the opportunity to press their claims to the throne of the East Roman Empire. And historically they managed to unseat the Paelaelogi Dynasty with the support of the nobles of Byzantium, and the Commeni Dynasty of Byzantium began.;;;;;;;;;;10556
EVENTHIST15101;The Commenus of Trebizond have unseated the Paelaelogus of Constantinople and assumed rulership of the East Roman Empire.;;;;;;;;;;10557
EVENTHIST15102;The Commenus of Trebizond have failed to unseat the Paelaelogus of Constantinople and assume rulership of the East Roman Empire.;;;;;;;;;;10558
EVENTHIST15103;Empress Zoe of the Empires of Byzantium and Trebizond found it increasingly difficult to rule the seperate Empires and so she appointed a line of Regents to rule in Trebizond in her stead.;;;;;;;;;;10559
EVENTHIST15104;That Paelaelogus usurper Micheal had returned to Byzantium at the head of an army of Catholic heathens from Poland and forced out beloved Emperor Dauid out of power - and further more the upstart Emperor had even executed him for treason! This left Trebizond with only two choices, subserivence to the Byzantine throne or the formation of a Republic styled after those in Venice and Genoa. Clearly the first option was completely unacceptable - so Trebizond became a Republic with the aid of Venice and Genoa.;;;;;;;;;;10560
EVENTHIST15200;The Genoan offer of supplying funds to enable Byzantium to reform their Military had been accepted and Byzantium has ceeded their claims to Kaffa and Kerch. Genoa offerred to pay for the Byzantine reforms to spite Venice - as a strong resurgent Byzantium friendly to Genoa would be a strong asset against their traditional rivals in Venice.;;;;;;;;;;10561
