I just tried it and it works, just make sure you spend all of your money first (build units and/or don't ask for money from Albania). Otherwise the Ottomans will still take peace but you will have to give them all of your money instead of a simple defeat.

Weird. I have the same problem GrossmeisterM observed: though I can vassalize Albania, I do NOT get drawn into the Ottoman war. I was assuming a bug crept in somewhere, but not sure now, if only some of us experience this anomaly.

I've been playing a Byzantium game and didn't get how I was supposed to vassalize Albania... Without a 5 year truce the experience is incredibly maddening (the ottomans will, more often than not, roflstomp you, and Hungary will bail ( to avoid the -5 stab hit, I guess).

Also, I was wondering, is there any point to having Austria as an ally if Hungary isn't? I think without access through Hungary, Austria won't really do much.

Possibly unrelated, but: I've been playing a Byzantium game and I've noticed something weird that these screenshots would seem to illustrate... My game is Ironman, and while I get achievements and the fist appears on the right side when selected, the fist does not appear on the left when I select the game... the tooltip says it's not ironman, but in other places it does, what's up with that?

Same checksum here. I experienced something similar in another case : as Austria I force vassalized Provence when Burgundy was at war with them, what happened is that Provence was still at war with Burgundy but I wasn't drawn into it. In the end Burgundy annexed Provence and I couldn't do a thing about it, there's probably a bug about that somewhere in the game.

Wait. So you WERE able to vassalize Albania, get drawn into the Ottoman war, and negotiate a mild peace?

Some of us don't seem to get dragged into the Ottoman war, since 1.3.2 came out. But you imply you "just" tried this, so I assume it was with 1.3.2? Or was it a few days ago (i.e., 1.3.1)?

I just tried it before I posted. Worked for me.

When I'm running the game through Steam, or offline but with the Steam Server running, the force vassalization of Albania results in war with the Ottomans.

When I just execute the game files, without running Steam, the force vassalization of Albania does not draw me into the Ottoman war and they end up annexing Albania a few months later.

I guess the assertions that you only need Steam to download and that the game can run fine without Steam are not true. Wonder what else doesn't work right if you play the game without Steam running.

Well, yes. Achievements, ironman, multi-player would all require Steam. But I've seen numerous assertions that the standard single player game should work just fine without Steam, just copy the game files to another directory or computer. Indeed, that "backup" seems a matter of prudence given Steam's automatic updating.

But this type of bug, even if minor itself, implies such assertions are false and that Steam really is required for a bug-free single player experience. Again, one wonders if any other bugs slip in under the radar, if you're running a SP game without Steam.

I think I might have an idea of what the issue is. You can play the base game without patches off Steam but Steam is required to play a patched game. I dunno, though.

Or just go to your steam folder for EU4 and use the actual launcher, not the Steam launcher. It skips the loading menu entirely and opens the game without Steam.

Right. That's the mechanism that is buggy. At least for this particular instant. But I would be surprised if the wonkiness were limited to this situation (BYZ vassalizing ALB, not getting pulled into OTT-ALB war).

I thought that approach worked in the past. Perhaps it never did work right and I never noticed. Perhaps it is related to patches or DLC. I just know it currently does not work correctly.

sorry, forgot to report back. while my checksum was fine, and steam file validating gave no errors i still did a fresh install of the game, then it worked
