Try restoring the Western Roman Empire, and establishing the True Emperor's hegemony over the heretics? I've had tons of fun doing that in the late game (haven't quite succeeded yet).

I feel restoring the pentarchy is a bit underwhelming.. In CK2 you declare Catholicism a heresy, that does not happen in this game. Might be too OP, but something more should happen than just disabling the papacy. As an orthodox nation you don't see much benefit from no papacy anyway.

And restore the Roman Empire should be in EU4 as well! :D

If I knew this Ironman Byz game was going to be this good, I would've done a formal AAR. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy anyway and would rather play more EU4 than do that. But wanted to share one of those awesome campaigns you may get now and then.

Shortly after re-establishing the theme system, I began to build a better trade fleet and save MP to actually tech up instead of spending it coring and culture changing. However, I was pulled into War of Succession with Spain over Poland for some reason and decided to check why. Somehow and some time during the campaign, my Emperor became a von Hapsburg! I didn't realize this and given that my stability and prestige has been mostly shot the whole game and I was resigned to just winging the rest of the game militarily annexing new territory, content that I was able to make short work of the Ottomans in a personal record time. But I guess Austria, as a long time ally, gave me their name instead!

VP1kWUs.png

Upon further investigation, Austria is currently ruled by a Regency. I was like "sweet!" As soon as that ruler becomes of age, I'm going to Claim Throne and annex that sucker! And yes I did manage to westernize shortly before 1520 before rolling all over the Ottomans. ;)

On another note: Novgorod still alive in 1633... wow.

The ultimate aim sould be to restore the "old" Roman Empire. Conquer Italy, Spain, France and England. I have often tried but failed each time.

You can conquer Iberia and Italy militarily, but you'll need to PU England and France, become Emperor and manually diploannex the princes to do this without getting bogged down in an insanely boring late game coalition spiral.

Me, I'm an Empire of the Greeks kind of Byzantium player. It's time to finish what Alexander started!

I used basically the same strategy here only allied P-L and Mamluks instead of Hungary - was way over my dip limit for the first 20-30 years which hurts but now I have almost all of Anatolia under my vassals, Georgia and the Balkans already fully annexed and it's only 1480. Having low dip tech isn't so bad, I will probably westernise soon (want to get the missionary boost from religious group first)

LOL that is always my goal with pretty much every European country I play. Pitty I got to the Germanic territories too late given my quick setup. Perhaps I should ignore Austria as an ally and take Diplomacy/Expansion instead of Naval Ideas next time around.

I took my opening move from another thread:

1) While paused, declare war on Albania.
- Board 4 troops onto your ships and proceed to blockade Albania
- Improve Relations with Bosnia
- Queue 1 infantry and 1 cavalry in Constantinople

2) Unpause, and vassalize Albania as soon as you see 25% hit on the war score.
Land your troops ASAP after Albania accepts as you will be pulled into a war with Ottomans

i'm confused, i've tried this strategy right now. the thing is, after i vassalize albania, i don't get pulled into war with the ottomans. albania is still it war with them and gets annexed as soon as the siege of their province is over. did it like 5 times now, don't know what i'm doing wrong. the game even tells me when i negotiate peace with albania that i will be dragged into war with the ottomans, but it just doesn't happen.

Im thinking about starting a Byzantium game, but I dont own the DLC. Is it crucial or can I get away without it ?

I think its worth it too. 50% off on Steam if you get it now!

Well it was a fun game.

Otto declared on me. I got a defensive battle position. Rolled 0,0,0,6,1,0,0. End of the Byzantium Empire.

Sometimes I hate this game.

I think something changed in 1.3.2. Doubt it's an intentional nerf, though, think it's a bug.

And it looks like there is another potential bug, as well: the Summary screen indicates you won't pay any Dip Power points for the Albanian vassalization. But you then get charged the normal 45.

For that matter, why were you able to vassalize a nation whose capital you had not occupied? I thought you would only be able to attempt that demand when you occupied the capital province.

Haven't tried any other vassalizations since 1.3.2, so no idea if it is a problem with all vassalization attempts? Or is there something about this war or any starting war that makes them problematic?

I have no idea why it won't happen. Is your game up to date on patches? If so, try doing a clean reinstall.
Have you been able to recreate your strategy, particularly the Albanian vassalization, since the 1.3.2 patch?

So I just tried this and got about halfway through.
Vassalized Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Wallachia. Allied Hungary.

Then what? Ottomans don't DoW me so I gotta DoW them. Okay, but Hungary winds up in like 3 other wars so it won't come to help me even though they join the war. Ottomans come and as lucky nations go they steamroll me in a second.

Wait. So you WERE able to vassalize Albania, get drawn into the Ottoman war, and negotiate a mild peace?

Some of us don't seem to get dragged into the Ottoman war, since 1.3.2 came out. But you imply you "just" tried this, so I assume it was with 1.3.2? Or was it a few days ago (i.e., 1.3.1)?

I just tried it and it works, just make sure you spend all of your money first (build units and/or don't ask for money from Albania). Otherwise the Ottomans will still take peace but you will have to give them all of your money instead of a simple defeat.

My problem comes later though, same question as Lord Finnish, what do you when you have all your vassals ? I thought about blockading the strait and take my cores back but it appears the Ottomans won't fall for that if they are still allied with Crimea. I also tried to break their alliance through war but they stomped over Poland/Lithunia/Austria (already in another war though) by themselves without a sweat :glare:
