In my current game I am fighting a civil war against my liege (France) to establish elective law. I have a larger force than them, and they have not called in any allies. However an army allied to France in a different war is following their army around at the moment. I was concerned when I saw what at first appeared to be an 8000 man hostile army coming out of nowhere, but on hovering the mouse over it, only a small fraction of it was actually hostile, with most of the army composed of a neutral English force. So I keep my army in place, expecting to be fighting a few hundred men. But instead I fight and badly lose a battle against the full 8000 man force. They haven't called in the English to fight in my war, so how can it be that this happened? Very annoying, and it seems to keep happening when I reload the game.

There used to be a problem where the AI would always count attached forces as part of its total strength and then attack you and lose horribly because of a situation like this where a large allied force was neutral in the specific battle. It was patched to be in the current state, which is hopefully less bothersome.

Thanks, that explains the crappy reality. I had to spam mercenaries, not the most elegant way to win.

I think it is good the way it is now. Why would allies watch their ally getting slaughtered by a 3rd party just because they are not at war with the 3rd party?
